hello everyone.

its time for me to change my everyday car to something a little quicker.

i'm looking to buy a mitsubishi 3000 GT

I would really like the 3.0L V6 twin turbo. Does anyone know anything about these cars and any known problems with them i should look out for when buying.

Also is anyone interested in a Vectra 2.5 V6 GSI.........probably not. :?

Sorry Alec , I thought someone else would reply to that one. Having said that , I do know someone who does know a lot about them , i.e. all Jap' cars , especially the quick ones. He specialises in upgrading them. His own demo car is a 350Z with 450bhp and he's building another , not sure what make , with 900bhp !!! YES ------- he is a nutter.
Seriously though he really does know these beasts. He used to work for Toyota , has built his own bike engined KIT , started in business for himself 3 yrs ago with 1 man and has now bought out G-FORCE in Aylesbury , 1200bhp rolling road , 6 men plus the contract for all PORSCHE GT3 racing series have to be done by him. Long way I know from you but if you want a car he'll find it , sort it or tune it . Brilliant at diagnosis so no time gets wasted figuring out what's wrong.
Mention Rob Farley if you contact him , his name's Dave.

He imports cars on a regular basis , sure he'd find you a good'n

Hi Alec,

Sorry didn't see your post until now.

For what it is worth, and it ain't a lot am sure, I've looked at these before. Really great cars. Go very well, handle well, stop well. Nice snug cockpit. Loved it.

So in the end I went for a Toyota/Lexus Soarer instead!

There were a few reasons....the GTO/3000Gt is trying to be a supercar but is too heavy for it, it's also expensive to run... both maintenance, it's quite hi-tech so some parts can be PRICEY and it's a bit of thirsty beast too. Now if it was just those things on their own I'd have still gone for it but for me it also fell short in several other areas as well.

With the Soarer you get Lexus build quality, not that the Mitsi's is so bad but it is nowhere near this good, if it is the 2.5 TT it is just as fast as the GTO/3000gt, again it handles well but there's no 4x4, however if you get the V8 Active (very rare with only 800 ever made and VERY expensive at the time) it does have the 4wheel steer and it also has active suspension! Though as it 'only' has a NA four litre in it it's a bit slower. Mind you they can do million mile distances which the Mitsi won't.

A major difference though I found was that the Soarer, whether TT or the V8's, is a LOT more comfortable over longer distances. I can get out of mine after driving 500 miles and it feels like I've only done 100 tops. It is the nicest vehicle to drive I've ever come across, and you are not just 'duvet'd' as it were, you drive it you don't waft along but you are very well looked after in there. Also the GTL's and Actives make the nice equipment levels of the GTO/3000gt look almost prison cell like in comparison. My Active really is unbelievable, even down to the touch screen EMV unit which controls everything from the aircon, to the media centre inc. TV and displays the reversing camera!!

Another BIG bonus if you aren't planning to own just a crotch rocket on 4 wheels for you and the missus to drive in is that there is actually decent room in the back for passengers, which for a sports coupe is almost unheard of!

Meanwhile the only thing that I could tick in the against box for the Soarer was a deep seated dislike of auto's...standard in the V8's...but after deciding to give it a go I'm now delighted I did as the box is brilliant and I have just as much fun flicking into 'power' setting and then using the overdrive button in much the same way as one would drop a gear! In fact I liked the car so much I bought a TT as well...and I made sure it was an auto too!! The TT is also actually really economical...it's a 170mph car that'll do 33mpg...not bad at all in my book.

Anyway just my tuppence worth. Mightn't help...but you did ask! :D

cheers for all the info. i have already spoken to a few people and thay basically came to the same conclusion about the GTO. i think that has totally put me off getting one now. I will definately look into other cars like the soarer now and also the 200sx.

as for automatics, i will probably never own one. not my cup of tea i'm afraid. also as for my missus driving my cars? that will never happen in a million years. my cars are my pride and joy and nobody except me drives them. she'll have to live with that!

anyway thanks for your very good advice.

much appreciated!

Hi Alec,

Glad to be of help.

Just a couple of things...if you are going to look at the Soarer, which in my opinion is a fantastic car, then you are going to be hard pushed to find a manual as they only came in the TT's and are quite rare even in them, and that may be because they are not actually any better, in fact Autospeed reckons the auto version is the better of the two boxes as it is more suited to the turbo set-up it has.

Secondly, don't close yourself off to the auto without trying it first fella!

I was very much like you, and I thought all autos were slushboxes, not proper drivers cars etc. etc. but after trying this particular 'box I'm prepared to acknowledge that technology has come a long way since the 70's when I formed those ideas as a kid reading car mags. You may find yourself v. pleasantly surprised by how well they can drive, and also very glad of it when stuck in stop start traffic...which is a lot these days! Then again you may not...but you won't know until you've tried it.

If you are around Cardiff way, or indeed if I head past Gloucester soon, which I'll be doing in a couple of weeks, then I'd be more than happy to take you for a spin to judge for yourself!

Cheers,
G.

that would be lovely. cheers for the offer.

i will still consider an auto i expect. just manual has always seemed more apealing to me. still if the rest of the cars good why should an automatic box put me off. i can always modify it anyway if i don't like it after a while. that would be a nice challenge for me.

give us a shout if you are up this way and we'll try and meet up!

cheers for now!

Alec
