Escort front hub question, My new ones dont fit :(
Well i just received these shiney ali hubs with studs and bearings but the bearings are sloppy on the stub. Are the stubs definately MK2 escort.
Also, what are the 3 threaded bolt holes around the stub.
Last question, are MK2 escort Discs located between the wheel and the hub or between the hub and the upright?, reason i ask is because the hub has 4 threaded holes in the back of the hub that faces the upright

Erm, I'm not sure the Group4 rally hubs fit the regular escort stub axles, my guess is that the rally cars have stronger uprights. The 3 holes are from the orginal backplate that noone uses. The disc bolts to the square part/not the round one of the hub and is closest to the upright. So you have to remove the hub in order to replace the discs. Not like modern cars where the disc is sandwished between the hub and the wheel.
So the disc bolts to the threaded holes and in the non threaded holes, studs should be inserted as escort mk2 doesn't use bolts, but nuts to secure the wheel.
A handy thing for you might be a haynes escort mk2 non mexico/RS book. I have it and it's most usefull to get things right the first place. I could scan a few pages of nterest, but no the whole book as it's massive.

I am waiting for my manual to arrive so that will help a lot. They supplier seems to think that the bearings are just different. I'm wondering if they are going to fit.
They suppllied metric studs to fit with new bolts.
Do you guys with escort parts run the discs the same way as ford or have you mounted them between the hub and the wheel?

that makes sense now. Where did you get the discs from?, I have some decent callipers but the discs i was going to make fit woud have to be fitted outboard. I can fab some brackets, can you see any other issues with fitting the discs like that?

how much is cheap?
they want for £80 plus vat for 285 x 21 mm discs (1 piece). I have 4 pot hi spec calipers with brackets that i could modify to fit. Only thing is the discs are not grooved/drilled but they are so big for a kit car that i dont think it will matter. Especially with an Atlas axle with a disc conversion on it.

Ok, a bit of an update, it seems the grp4 hubs will fit but i need a set of bearings that are big enough to fit the group 4 hub and small enough bore to fit the standard escort hub. Apparantly these are available and the guy is going to supply me with a set. The rest of it looks like its going to fit ok.
I have 2 options for the brakes, i can get a set of 285mm x 21 discs for £90 to fit my new hub and put them behind the hub in the stock place or i can fit the 285 x 25 mm discs that i have already behind the wheel in front of the hub. The billet brackets for the callipers i have look almost spot on to put the callipers there. I know they will clear the wheel as the front wheels i have were fitted to an XR2 along with the brake kit so i think thats the route i will go. The hibs also came with longer metric studs.
That will hopefully get the front rolling again.
Then it will be time for the back end. I have been tempted by various options including the de dion conversion or a home built IRS conversion but at the moment i want to get the thing driving so the easiest option other than putting the english back is a capri atlas. I think i have managed to source an LSD complete axle (fingers crossed) for a bargain, complete with brakes etc. This should be quite easy to fit, and should just be a matter of copying the brackets on the english over to the atlas. It has a 3.09 final at he moment which will have to be replaced with smoething more like a 3.77 or even a 4. The stock rx7 diff is a 4.1 for a manual and 3.9 for an auto. the more sporty ltd edition models had a 4.3.
With the reduced weight and the increased power i reckon a 3.7 should be a good balance for low revs on the road and quick enough acceleration on the track.
The car has the wider RT wings on the back so the extra 2 inches of width should be accommodated and i still need to source rear wheels so the offset can be decided to get a good fit.
Once its rolling i will then turn the front into a flip front as this makes all the fab work need a lot easier on my back!
I also need to tidy up the wiring as it looks like spagetti junction behind the dash but wiring is not my forte so i may have several more questions. The ecu i am planning on using comes with it own loom which runs the engine, fuel pump and coils so the only thing i need to sort are the temp/pressure gauges and the alternator which i'm not to sure how to do (the alternator that is)
I'm going to the ring at Easter.....i wonder if it will be done
