My understanding is that the Ford system is more than just an on-off switch - there's actually +/- 10 degress on both cams independantly, via some cleverness with moving oil around within the cam pulleys. I don't think any third-party ECU is going to cope with this very well.
Anyways, Kev is correct, I want to fit some cams to make some more power, so it's definitely easier just to swap the head for an earlier non-VCT one.

The non-VCT head has turned up this morning...

Looks like there will soon be another Stylus RT up and running then

Don't hold your breath just yet... it depends on your definition of "soon"! My target is next summer at some point.
Actually it is up and running already, and might even pass an MOT (if they ignored the leaky brake master cylinder) - but it sounds like a bag of spanners, and I want to make it into the car I want, if you see what I mean.

On mine, or on your recent engine malady? I think/hope mine is a stuck follower, so the first job on the Stylus is to open it up and try to sort that out.

Mine just sounded like noisy tappets so I was stunned at the actual damage . With yours , I recall Phil going for a spin a few days before we all trotted down to Llandow then blowing the head gasket . He did an over night new gasket job then on track at Llandow it threw a conrod through the block -----------
I seem to remember though that this engine is not that one but another engine entirely

Yes, that is what happened as I understand it - this one is different engine. Still pulls well, but sounds a bit tractor-ish. I'm hoping for an easy fix so I can sell the lump on with a clear conscience and get a little money back towards the replacement stuff. Watch this space...!

black tops tap a lot anyway - mine sounds like a bag of bolts, but mr dunnell says its fine and that i should fit the silver top cam cover as its metal and more dense.

It's a VX, rather than a Zetec. And definitely not a normal noise - pretty sure it is a follower issue, just hoping it is crudded up so a clean/replace will fix it.

Don't think these bent valves are going to help much
Ah well, it was cheap, hopefully the rest of the head is straight, otherwise it's an expensive doorstop!

A brief update, though I don't really have alot to say.
I've been bogged down in the Midget refurb, which has snowballed to take alot longer than I thought it was going to. Had to send it off to have some small bits of welding done, and been doing lots of "well, while I'm doing x, I might as well do y"... Ah well, there's a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel now.
There's been a couple more shiny items purchased for the Stylus rebuild:
Firstly, a concentric hydraulic clutch slave cylinder for the Type 9 - I doubt there's going to be enough room in the tunnel for a clutch lever arm to operate.
Secondly, I have just picked up an Emerald K3 ECU. It's come out of a Westfield which was in a serious accident, so I'm getting it off up to DaveW for a health check to make sure all is well.
That's all for now!

where did you get your hydraulic clutch slave from? Very expensive?

If he'd asked me that question I'd have pointed him to Burtons and cost around £200 when I fitted mine . A spacer will be provided once you've measured the gap required minus 4mm's slack . I bought the spacer closest to required and had it skimmed off .

I got it on an individual listing on eBay. I paid £130 for it. It was originally supplied by Burtons I believe.
There is a commercial listing I've seen which is selling the same item, I suspect a little cheaper than the Burtons price...
clickety-click here.
I figured it would be the best option as I want to get the engine as far back as possible in the chassis - mainly so that I can get rid of the bonnet bulge and return to the original clean bonnet line.
Any further progress with your car since it got painted?
