Sound on PC !

Hello all you guys brought up on computors !
Sound through the 5.1 speaker system has never been a problem till now. I only need it for listening to soundtracks of cars online or to send online greeting cards etc , very rarely play music so didn't really notice it stopping. The speakers seem o.k. as you can hear them when you switch them on . However absolutely nothing comes out from them from a soundtrack email / CD / DVD or anything I want sound for. Have checked the ' mute ' button on the display but no go still also done ' system restore ' back 2 months to when I last recall playing a download .
Any ideas that my limited PC knowledge can try ???

if there is or if there aint double click the sound section and find the sound driver and try to reinstall the driver this my help.
