I get 38 - 45 depending upon journey.
really like the engine and the auto box is very perceptive and I would not have it as a manual (and that comes from an auto-hater).
why you looking for one?
I have a 4.2L V8 audi S6 for sale, that does similiar mpg, oh no sorry, that does gpm
just bought an RS4 too - but will be coming in the vx220 as it will blend in a little better on the stand!

Purely investigative at present , however the Landcruiser(25mpg & 22mpg towing) although absolutely great for towing and as a car to drive around in ----- is just too expensive since retirement and the associated disappointing pension fund . For the job it's mean't to do it's excellent , way better than a Landrover equivelant in all respects which was fine while in business and pulling 3.5t trailers with landscaping equipment .
My short list for towing the 400kgs trailer plus 600kgs Stylus ------------ plus generally more economic transport without losing performance is : --
Alpha 159 2.4 Ti DIESEL --- favourite
Audi A4/5 3.0 DIESEL --probably better but not as pretty
BMW 5 series 3.0 DIESEL --- ditto above
Having driven the Alpha , a red one , I absolutely loved it to drive and with a remap from RED DOT RACING this is likely to be the choice , pushing the already good performance to 270bhp and 400 lbft --- still leaving capable of 40mpg just cruising but around 30mpg towing.
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

As a former Alfa owner (8 years of an Alfa 145) there is no alternative to the 159 2.4. Cracking engine, especially with the remaps available. Just make sure you look after it as they are high mantainence cars compared to the german/ford/mainstream stuff.

www.Alfaowner.com should give you most of the obvious things to look for on the model you're after.

Rob

"petercoll" on JPSC has a black Alfa 159 Sportwagen as his company car / tow vehicle. Have seen it at various shows.
Not sure if its the diesel, but probably worth a PM for comment

The one you want is the Q4 Ti - 4wd, top trim. Bit rare in the UK, most Brits bought the Audi instead.
(Have been looking at them myself :P )
SSC Stylus Integrale Turbo16V
Kit 1999, OTR 2002, and still tweaking....

I've driven the 159 2.4JTDM ti and it does pull well but not unless you get passed light throttle . Actually has more on paper bhp than my cruiser at 210bhp/CR 165bhp . Torque at 295lbft , just 15/20 lbft less than the Cruiser didn't actually feel it so not dead sure I would be happy towing ---- I can easily forget the car's on the trailer behind me in the Cruiser though.
If I eventually get convinced then a remap will likely be on the cards at Alphatune or Red dot Racing.
Not sure the Q4 Ti would be any more mpg than the Cruiser :?:

Having bought an ALFA 159 2.4jtdm ti and towed with it too now , I'm impressed with the all round performance , handling and economy. I've done about 600 miles averaging 38mpg according to the dashboard readout but have yet to fill up again to check the actual mpg ---- well these gadgets lie don't they :?:
Once I know the true mpg , I may well get it remapped , EGR & DPF removed plus sensor regen deleted. This will then show all the real readouts correctly again. I won't be looking for a maximum bhp/lbsft increase , more an economy biased remap plus 20% power/torque improvement
It will have to wait a while though ---- funds  perhaps a 2013 Alfa present :P

Well --- the dashboard readout does lie BUT it under states the real mpg which is actually 39.63mpg over 391 miles , after this fill up today . Some 50 to 80 mph cruising but also a 2.5 hour run in M25 stop go traffic , mostly in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear for 45 miles then the rest on the A3 for another 30 miles , some around Guildford again stop go traffic in the low gears.
So looks as though it's quite economic , at least if you use the V Power diesel which my last two fill-ups have been :)
Towing was around 33mpg at 40 to 60mph but not '' fill-up '' measured.

Booked the Alfa in at Gamma Motorsport for DPF/EGR removal and delete of sensors on ecu plus an engine re-map of 20% improvement bhp/lbft [not going for the 270bhp  ]. Nigel has contacted me three times since my first online enquiry , answering my questions regarding mot and wear/tear issues . Price was originally £430 inclusive of vat but last week offered me a £100 discount if done by the end of January 2013 ---- so it's going in on the 8th January :P

Any more suspension parts anybody :?: :?: :?:

Re-map done today and DPF emptied EGR deleted on ECU. I think the Alfa must have been on a ''regen'' on the way up to Banbury because it normally averages 38mpg on the dashboard over a decent distance BUT today , just 33.5mpg . After remap etc coming home over the same route at 80mph(ditto on way up)apart from trafficy areas in Aylesbury and Banbury where I did 20 to 50mph ------- 48.6mpg on the dashboard readout :!: :!: :!:
So if I ignore the 33.5mpg as probably going through a 'regen' then assume my previous norm at 38mpg ----- it's still 10mpg better which staggered me , as I was expecting 4 to 5 mpg better.
Performance wise ---- equally staggering . Throttle response is instant the moment you touch it and just light throttle , say 20% , gives awesome accelleration in every gear . No flat spots or hesitation . Before resetting the dash readout mpg for driving home , I took it out for a test drive before paying the bill ------ well :P it just absolutely flew if you wanted it to , in fact not much slower than my Stylus which bearing in mind the Alfa is 1600kgs is very impressive.
At £330 inc vat it's a bargain just for the better mpg on it's own --- very pleased 8)

Yeh right ------ but I couldn't afford an 8C

I also need to do a brim to brim fuel and mileage check against the dash readout , as it's not accurate anyway
