Rear brakes, Live axle

Post by anton »

Ok i have sacrificed the drums off the my capri axle as style and attractiveness are also a concern on my build (i'm being a tart).
What rear brakes are people using, i've got Girling calipers off a golf gti which look very similar to sierra ones but i'm still deciding on the best way to mount them.

I'm not overly keen on welding brackets onto the rear axle just on the basis of making sure they're on there square and it still leaves the problem of having to shim the halfshafts as removing the drums has produced a 2mm gap where the backplate should be.... the phrase 'rod form my own back' is springing to mind!

Cheers Anton

old drums

Post by stylussprinter »

Why have you ditched the ''' old and unfashionable Capri drums ''' ONLY intending to replace them with some more OLD not to mention HEAVY production car etc etc etc :?:
It's a lightweight car and drums aren't heavy in comparison to production calipers plus fitting bits/bobs. If you must fit disc brakes , do it with alloy calipers designed for the job. Willwoods and several others make kits. They normally include a small narrow lightweight disc and necessary brackets. Leave HI SPEC alone though --- bad news.

Rob.
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

Um have weighed the peugeot disks and the golf calipers (they're alloy ones off the mk4 gti) they're notably ligheter than the drum/shoes setup and i figure in my experience of rear drive the rear brakes wear down fairly quickly so i'd go with the easier to change pads rather than shoes. TO be honest was put off the wilwood/lightweight experience on the money front and whilst i don't rule it out as a future option for the moment i want to get the car built, i can improve it as cash allows..

As i said i think they're also more attractive which is a tarts answer i accept :D

Try speaking to Rally Design there Hydra Mech rear brake kit uses VAG callipers (http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog/pr ... s_id=12231) and talking to them at Stoneleigh there disks don’t require the half shafts turning down. I’ve heard VAG callipers will fit Serria brackets with a couple of washers to line things up so Capri sport might be worth talking to (http://www.zyworld.com/CAPRISPORT/1_brakes.htm)

Take your point , didn't twig they were alloy/that light  However , since building mine some 6 years ago , I've looked at the shoes 3 times and they're hardly worn . Don't do much work see
