Re: Alloy wheel nuts
Wheels and tyres are mated now but they've put the front wheel ' weights ' in the wrong place , exactly inline with the steering arm to rackend pin ----- the rears don't matter where the weights are but I did mark the fronts with blue tape about 30mm back from the rim
I'll either have to drive 20 miles again or sort them at my cost locally Anyway , here they are on the car and there's a little rear arch extention to be done , otherwise brilliant . Car's now 12mm's lower without any suspension mod's plus 25kgs lighter , so I'll be lowering the tyre pressure to suit. Then I need some track time to scrub them in and optimise the front geometry.

All looking good Rob, the gold/chrome combo looks tops with the red paintwork and the bigger sidewalls give it a proper retro balloon tyres style.stylussprinter wrote:Wheels and tyres are mated now but they've put the front wheel ' weights ' in the wrong place , exactly inline with the steering arm to rackend pin ----- the rears don't matter where the weights are but I did mark the fronts with blue tape about 30mm back from the rim

Just hope you make a better job of the rear arches than I did

Re: Alloy wheel nuts
Yes , I think so too George . I originally planned getting Black wheels , possibly CXR's but although they could do any offset they couldn't supply a 7.5 inch wide rim , only a 7 or 8 inch . That would have been fine for 7 inch wets , if two sets were affordable but they also weighed 4.5 kgs ----- so while on a weight saving session I wanted the max possible , hence browsing around and finding Force Racing Wheels. Black certainly looks more discreet and serious but the bling of gold on red got the better of me ----- all I need now is a huge gold area , front to back of the body then it'll be an Alan Mann Stylus (no I'm not serious but it does have loads of FORD bits )hearbear wrote:Hi Rob

Re -- cxr's , I've heard that COMPOMOTIVE are going to the receiver , possibly just a rumour . Anyone else know if that's correct

Re: Alloy wheel nuts
Thats some weight loss (25kg)
It should also help lighten the steering.
How did you get on with the nuts? can you use them?

Re: Alloy wheel nuts
I've written to the MSA for clarity , seeing as although apparently banned , I don't circuit race which is what would produce constant braking over 12 or so laps , producing heat that moves into the hub , wheel and nuts/studs. This , it's said , is the objection --- that the alloy nuts will expand each time then get torqued up and repeated etc , so causing thread stripping eventuallypigeondave wrote:Thats some weight loss (25kg)

Weight loss wise , it's more important around the front wheels which both turn plus grip and rotary weight is equal to around 10 times static weight ----- so that would effect the car's handling all round as though 100kgs had been taken off PLUS of course the rear ----- let alone the power to weight or tyre pressures , all a plus .
The big minus --- is the loss of top end max speed in 5th which I've calculated to be approx'ly 8mph on my tyre size/diff/gear ratio . It'll touch the limiter sooner but be travelling at it's max for a longer distance of the straights which overall , I hope will result in a quicker lap .
If I'm wrong , I'll either drop Goodwood as my favourite event and stick to short sprints OR change the diff ratio --- AGAIN

Re: Alloy wheel nuts
I've found a source for an alloy of titanium and high carbon steel wheel nuts , so have contacted them for info of size , thread and taper etc . They'll be half the weight or very close to that.

Re: Alloy wheel nuts
H'mmm , sent you an email Dave but don't think I'm going that route now , having seen their price at £195 a set of 16 . Really light at just over a pound weight for the set of 16 . Another company I found and emailed via their website hasn't returned my enquiry which is annoying , because they priced theirs at £95 which I would have gone for. It's really only the front wheels that feel the benefit when on track , if lowering rotary weight and having bought the VERY light wheels , thought I'd continue the theme.stylussprinter wrote:Will do Davepigeondave wrote:If your contact comes through, could you post the details as I'd be interested.
I'll probably buy tuner slim steel wheel nuts though now . Slim to not scratch the billet centres and with a torx internal fit for tightening , they'll keep the billets in tidy condition. They are 19.5mm's outer diameter so easily slip into the hole before touching the taper.

Re: Alloy wheel nuts
mmm expensive.
but when you look at it you do get 16 of them £12.19 per nut.
But its still too much for shiny bolts . I can't remember if i spent that much on rod ends when i changed the front lower wishbones.

Re: Alloy wheel nuts
OK , I've sorted it now ---- titanium steel nut weighed 22 grams but 1008 steel nut from EIGHT SPEED is just 25 grams and totally MSA legal --- against standard nuts at 60 grams each.
JOB DONE and ordered --- 20 RED nuts plus tool to fit at £56 delivered . Obviously only need 16 but that's the pack size/number . Code is 4531 and is available in 4 colours
I'm using open ended but others are available at slightly higher weight.
