Quaife gearbox views

Post by Shooter63 »

Hi all,

I've been offered a quaife type 9 all alloy gearbox, it's the model with synco and straight cut gears, the ratios seem OK, what do you guys think of it as a box for road work?

I have a Quaife from a racing Caterham . Close ratios , straight cut , a nice box. My 1st gear is 2.04 so if you have a high geared diff/3.89 it'll be annoying in traffic , otherwise it's great . Find out it's ratios . Nice that it's all ally though . Mine is uprated lubrication wise plus roller needle bearings , all done by Brian Hill in KENT.
2.04
1.54
1.24
1.0
0.91 not certain of this one :?:
diff 4.4
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

Why question - you need it! Especially as its alloy. You can always sell it on if you change your mind.

I have a Tran x straight cut. Dont know the ratios but changing gear is easier on the down shift. Noisy as you like though.

The 5th gear ratio at 0.87 will be a nice cruiser on the road . What's your diff ratio ? Sounds a nice box , mine's not ally .

I'm running a 3.89 ratio, but as I normally start off in 2nd with a bit of clutch slip, I think it will be ok, I've asked a few more questions, ie input shaft length, bill of sale ( it's brand new) etc, so we will see.

Ps thanks for the photos, they have given me a good guide on what's required in the cutting dept.

With a 3.89 and a 1st gear ratio of 2.04 , it'll do damn near 70mph so why start in 2nd :?:

Slight confusion, with my present box ( std 2ltr type 9) I pull of in 2nd, 1st is just too low,

Did you take the box? Interested to know if its a straight swap out. I'm after something similar, just waiting for one to come up.

No doubt you have heard of the saying, if it seems too good it normally is, well I'm pretty sure this is the case with the quaife. I found the ad on line, sent an email to ask the normal , still available etc received an email back confirming, when I asked if it was a short or long input shaft I got a vague response, this is when I got very suspicious, I asked on another forum if anybody was in the area, and if they would be willing to go and see the box, a guy volunteered, so I asked for a time, no response, after a few non answered emails I thought I would get sneaky, I got someone else to email, same thing all good up until you ask to see the box then nothing.

That's a shame, glad to hear you didn't get conned; sounds like we are both still looking. A 6 speed Caterham box came up on Locostbuilders.co.uk yesterday, listed about 17.00, by the time I logged on at 20.00 it had sold!
