Weighed the bits I've been able to junk at the weekend; came to 26Kg!! That includes the engine mounts and viscus fan so add back say 4kg for new mounts and an electric fan gives about 122Kg fully dressed which I dont think is half bad - at any rate it's 15kg less than the incomplete 1800 pinto that came withthe car.Bikenuts wrote:Iain,
Thanks for the extra info. Have you got a bonnet bulge or has shortening the sump allowed the engine to fit under the standard bonnet? Hoe much did you take off the sump? I was thinking about adding wings to the sump anyway – less than a gallon of oil makes me feel nervous
Incidentally CA18DET with all ancillaries including aircon compressor, engine loom, clutch, oil and even some water 146kg I’ll let you know how much I manage to strip off that. Gear box with oil 45Kg – about the same as a T-9 with a cast Iron bell housing but they will handle a lot of power – same basic box goes in 2WD Skylines.
Cheers

Hi Bikenuts,
Sorry it's taken so long to get them but I've got some photo's apparently of the engine mounts on my car finally. It went from Tim to do the suspension to Essex for the head and then back to Tim again set up the suspension better before eventually going to a chap in Coventry who is now doing all the work that needed/I wanted doing. In fact the cars done more miles without me in it than with so far!
Anyway I asked him to do some of the mounts for you and he's done them...do you still need them? Really sorry it's taken so long but it's been shunted from pillar to post till I was happy with the work getting done. It's now got the BMW Mini Xenons in and they look awesome, and the new dash is looking like it'll be great too, there's also been a colour change to Porsche Cayenne titanium and it really suits the car. Just waiting for the interior to go in and the 17's to go on now and I can enjoy it finally!

I've used the later SR20DET - but had to do similars mods - redo both bottom chassis rails (and strenghtened while I was there). For mounts I used two thick walls bits of 2 inch square tube upright with a 45 deg plate on top which the nissans mounts just sit in - very simple but strong.
I also had to widen the tunnel - but just did the passenger side and set the engine at a slight angle. I also fitted hard Nismo racing engine mounts, as there is so little room down the tunnel I wanted the engine to have as little movement as possible. I know a couple of other builders who had to do this after they ran the engine for a while and it kept hitting the tunnel.
Anyway - here's a pic for you - any questions just ask. And you think the wiring ia bad on a CAD - you wanna try the Sr20 - nightmare!!

Re: vents
I'll have a look at that, i was looking at a Kia bonet vent for mine just because its quite big and should cover up my lack of fibre glassing skills, only thing is i cant find one for saleRoo4 wrote:I found a bonnet scoop at Car Builder Solutions £8 plus p&p looks good and covers the holes well.

how big does your bonnet vent need to be? the one on a mitsubishi warrior is quite a fair size. alternatively you could do a similar thing to me and manufacture my own out of the bit that i cut out originally! look at my pic!
if neither are good, get back to me with dimensions and i'll keep my eye out for one!

I need one 15" wide and 29" (could get away with 22") long simply cause it will make it easier as i'm not mint with fibreglass

you don't have to be a master at fibreglass to make your vent. all i did was draw where i wanted the vent to be and cut it out using a hacksaw blade, then that piece that i'd cut out i used as the top of my vent. i left the back of it flush with the rest of the bonnet and raised the front up by about 1 1/2 inches. then i put a couple of strips of cloth and resin along each side to fix it in place.
after that, i used a pot noodle pot as a mould and made the 2 front corners of the vent, then i used filler to get the final shape and to make a nice rounded edge at the front.
it really was very simple and i'm no master with fibreglass.
when my car was finally painted i used some black mesh in the front.
you could always make a vent out of mesh to the shape you wanted, then cover it in glass cloth and resin to get the basic shape, then use filler to fill the low spots and sand it off. i don't think you should have too much problems trying either way to be honest. just mix up your resin with a little less hardener than usual to give you a longer working time!
hope thats some help. i'd try and get some photo's but i'm not in the country at the moment. have a look at my build on the site and see if you can get any ideas from that!

I understand what you mean, starting with a blank canvas, (new bonnet) the only trouble is mine already has bulge in it which is in the way so to speak, so i would rather cut it out and glass in a new one otherwise i will have to reshape where the holes are (if i use a smaller bulge/vent), if this makes sensealecmartin19 wrote:you don't have to be a master at fibreglass to make your vent. all i did was draw where i wanted the vent to be and cut it out using a hacksaw blade, then that piece that i'd cut out i used as the top of my vent. i left the back of it flush with the rest of the bonnet and raised the front up by about 1 1/2 inches. then i put a couple of strips of cloth and resin along each side to fix it in place.

That sounds good George, if you could post a photo on here and we can take it from therehearbear wrote:I have a bulge I got for the V8 but due to making a new plenum do not need it is about 18" across and the length of the bonnet supplied by Tim. If you wanted I could picture it and send for the price of postage as no use to me.
