I am sure I read here some where they should touch if possible.

I have a volvo 940 intercooler (big  ) and a golf rad the colsest i can get them is 30 mm.

The advice I've heard is that air will buffit around inefficiently if the rad's aren't touching rather than passing straight through both rad's :?:

mate with high power skyline says they should touch for that exact reason. airflow stalls between rad and cooler and becomes less efficient although will still work!
