New engine !
Well not exactly new but it looks that way after Paul Dunnell's engineer has finished detailing. They've been very busy with race engines delivered to them one week before the season starts SO were a bit pushed hence me waiting 2 mths for mine to be ' freshened ' . It should deliver a genuine 225bhp and 170ft/lbs , set to rev' cut at 7700rpm . It's been dyno'd at 8300 with even more but will last longer at 7700rpm. (It still has the standard crank - albeit balanced)
It should be enough to stretch my 'mind' for a while anyway. Got stacks to do before I've time to begin installation so I can just sit on a stool and stare at it in the shed.
Pic's are just before unloading from the truck after driving home from Dunnell's at Stowmarket/Suffolk. http://www.dunnellengines.com

Re: engine porn
Yep - it's goodbye carbs and HELLO sequential throttle bodies Just look at those trumpets ; I'll have to cut out part of the inner engine dirt guards to allow the number one cylinder to get air . Also need to sort out an airbox plus big tube air collector to the lower front body ----- here we go again , forever buildingWerner Van Loock wrote:damn that looks good and recon it will even sound better too
Rob. very exited though

Quicker ?
H'mmmm I might be on a par with him ; not sure I can beat the Duratec though because it still has more ft/lbs than my zetec and at a lower rev' band. Tim's , from memory is 225bhp with 180plus ft/lbs at around 5000 rpm -- the car is also 50kgs approx'ly lighter.(plus he can drive )Cerberus wrote:Very nice Rob, does this mean you will be quicker than Tim now
Phil
When I built mine originally , I had no eye to lightness because I thought it was light anyway being F/Glass etc. So as Stylus's go , mine is heavy at 626kgs , even after many lightening exersizes of various bits ££££££££££££££££££££ If I built one now , knowing how to do it , it would be relatively easy to get it around 550kgs. With me in the car plus fuel at SVA it weighed 761kgs and I'm 80 ish kgs
At our first Stylus track day at ENSTONE with other SYLVA cars , Tim and I swapped cars . Stuart , my son , said to me afterwards what did I think of the RT . I said that actually it didn't seem quicker but of course I'm very familier with my own car. The surprise was -------- he said '' well Dad , you were 1 sec' quicker than in your own 200bhp car '' The point I'm making here is that when a car is quick , you don't notice it as you assume you would apart from in a straight line of course.
When I've made changes to my set up and competed afterwards , Stuart always surprises me when he gives me my times . I don't feel it because it's cornering in a more stable way so the usual messages up your backside don't arrive
I live in hopes Rob.(ugh -- morning Tim )

jobs ?
Starting point was a full balance as I couldn't afford to go steel , pocket pistons , new ring set , honed bores , ARP rod bolts again , shells/mains were as new according to Paul D. Race front crank pulley , endurance intelligent alternator(very light) ceramic clutch plate , more head work , bigger valves , competition springs , sequential TB's , Dunnell's latest ECU then full run in and dyno test. Then the cosmetic stuff. If I'd gone steel crank it would rev' to 9000 rpm and produce 260bhp apparently. I'm limited to 7700rpm.mikeb wrote:Go on Rob. Tell us what your've had Dunnell do to the old girl. Mike
Rob.
Almost forgot the new cams , Dunnell's latest profile. Was going to have 1 cam and move the inlet to exhaust but he couldn't get the valve size I was after in time so had 2 cams with slightly larger valves. It worked well -- the torque curve is flat -- Dunnell doesn't broadcast how he acheives this unless you buy his gear . What I will say is that the % age difference in ft/lbs between low/high torque is single figures . He did ask me not to mention the figure . It's what gives him the edge and he is very secretive.

weight
You have to start from the beginning ------------ lightweight chassis/body -- no doors -- no screen -- no carpet -- alloy elite sequential box/diff -- carbon prop -- carbon seat -- all alloy uprights/hubs -- nothing on the dashboard other than necessary -- flip front/pinned boot(maybe carbon or thin F/Glass --- no hinges) All 7/16 ths bolts on pick up points NAS with alloy shims etc.Werner Van Loock wrote:Rob,
What would you do to make a new one lighter then? I still have to start you know and I would like to use a trailer/car combo less then 750kg's, so the lighter the car the heavier the trailer may be.
Then you could stay light with a tuned Hyabusa 1600cc / zetec se 1600 or the big Duratec 2lt.
So it would be 450 / 500 or 550 kgs ish
Now that would be one bloody quick Stylus ooh forgot to mention carbon tunnell and floor skinning.

Enthusiasm
I'm relieved to know its not only me that suffers from lapses in enthusiasm. Do you have an excuse, Cerebus e.g other unconnected hobbies or is it the dreded telly and the second (or third) glass of grog after tea ?
My personal distraction is amateur theatre. I've just finished being Cap'n Hook in Peter Pan. Now the garage is full of props/paint/timber etc. etc.
I wonder what other secret lives Stylus owners have ?
Steve.

We're - flat - broke, but hey! we do it in Stylus!
