Fuel tank

Post by Jaysun370 »

Hey all,

Apologies if this is in the wrong section..............

I need to call on the vast knowledge from memebers of this forum.

As i'm going to run a injected Zetec i need a return into the fuel tank. having got the tank off there is only an output.
Anyone know of any way that the tank can be modified, and if so by who as this is not something i could do :(
If i can't modifiy the tank i'll need to source a new one, so again anyone know of what type of tank is fitted to the Stylus and where i could source one from that'll have a return?

Cheers

Jason i took the sender out of the tank and drilled a 9.5mm hole through the top of the sender then used copper fuel pipe bent at 90 degrees for the return, works ok.

the tank that Tim supplies comes with a return already in it......
So you might have an old tank that doesnt have this, or a different tank all together! I would do as Phil suggests. This will be the safest, as you would need to solder/braze a pipe into the tank to make it leak proof and if already had fuel in it, can be entertaining when a flame gets near! :o

To mention, if your going to braize in the pipe drill out the little rivets holding the float to the sender body before you braize the copper pipe in otherwise the heat from braizing will fry the actual sender and render it useless  ask me how i know

it seems as though you may have an older tank or somthing? Or sender is held in with screws, so you can just take it out in 2 mins!

i take it yours was a blob on the bottom of the tank?! lol

No, mine is held in with six screws as well but when you lift the unit out the float is attached to the disc you just unscrewed by way of rivets, and there is a spade connector for the wiring which is held in place with a plastic lug, you need to remove this aswell otherwise the heat transfer from the braizing torch will melt everything, i need to re-do mine as it doesn't work anymore

The fuel tank is an early MG Midget one with (in some cases) an extended neck and is available from places like Moss for about £70 if you want a new one that's safe to weld etc, the later Midget tank will also fit but needs a bayonet type sender instead of the 6 screw one. Sprit bits sell an alloy tank with return but it’s a lot of money for such a simple design (about £360 from memory) I’ve been quoted about £150 in stainless – I’m hoping to eventually run on E85.

Fuel Return

Post by MattD »

I ali welded a aeroquip fitting into the side of the fuel cap funnel & joined to that with a proper fitting from the swirlpot overflow.
My swirlpot is rear mounted, so the return goes to that rather than into the tank.

Or just join the return into the side of the filler neck tube.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the suggestions, as a start i'll contact Tim and see if i can get hold of the right tank. I forgot to mention that there is also a small hole in the weld between the filler neck and tank, and although i could get it fixed i'd like to try and source a new tank first.

Thanks again

I welded a return to my tank after it had petrol in it. People seem to get hung up on it and think it will explode. All you need to do is flush at the highes point and you will see a haze of fumes come out just keep on flushing until this has gone. Pass the flame over the filler at arms length just to be sure and then weld to your hearts content. I have done it this way on a few tanks no probs.
