Which starter motor?

Post by Werner Van Loock »

I will be coupling a 1.8 zetec to a Type-9 gearbox, does anyone know which starter motor I have to use? I got the original Zetec motor with it.

I also need a spigot bearing, anyone any idea about that one?

Hello Werner,
Good to see you're getting busy with your build . The starter motor you need is a FORD CROSSFLOW one . There are many different starters fitted to the FORD cars of the 60's and 70's . All will fit but only one will fit if you are using RACELINE'S high capacity wet sump .(gets your clearance for road driving and extremely efficient sump/far superior to cutting down original)
Speak to PETE MCKEWAN (ex Mclaren mechanic) or CHRIS on 01483 811978 or fax 01483 810801 . Spigot bearing , I simply removed the old one and took it to a bearing trader as a pattern and that new bearing is still in it now , since 1999 without prob's.
Raceline can supply spigot and starter plus sump if you want it.
Regards , Rob.
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

The Ford part number for a spigot bearing is 1596468.

Not sure how much it costs but i'm sure its not more than £5.

Its from the dual overhead cam engine fitted in sierra's, possibly also fitted in CVH engines.

Hope that helps!

 It's probably too late now but you could have mine because I'll be fitting a geared starter when my engine goes in as the existing starter wont manage the new compression  I should have mentioned it before Werner  It was reconditioned last year and has only done 2 test days and 2 sprints since then.

Rob.(think it's on the parts for sale actually :?: )

Only number I have is the ford finis nr, don't think SKF or so can do anything with that. Anyone know the dimensions of it and type (ball, needle, bronze bush?)?

Rob,

Thanks for the offer, but aren't you using an alloy RS2000 bellhousing? Is the starter the same then?

I also have another question regarding the zetec, I'm having a phase1 zetec and they are known for sticky valves, so it should get 5W30 instead of 10W40, but would 5W40 also be good as all the sorts 5W30 oils I can get here are all very expensive except from the no-name products.

All the rest is mobil1, shell, castrol and elf, but all the top quality oils costing me almost the same for 5L oil as I paid for the engine.

And from the same brands the 5W40 cost almost half.

Or should I search for another supplier?

if it has hydraulic valves, then use 5w30, or you will get problems! If mechanical valves, then 5w30 or 10w40 is fine. My focus, which has mechanical valves, i run on 10w40 with no problems! If anything, i think it runs better on it!

oil

I'd go with a 30 , zetec's need it and it's a lot of work pulling the engine out if the unit doesn't last even if it was cheap
The starter's exactly the same for alloy as cast iron bellhousing .

Re: Starter.

2.0 DOHC / 1.8 CVH Sierra starter also fits well (Got recon unit of ebay - £20 !), Solenoid is in a different place to the X-flow one !

It depends whether you have a RACELINE sump or not. If you have then only the crossflow short version will fit OR a special ' made to fit geared starter ' as I've just had made. A bargain 1.4kw for £130 cash in his hand from LUKE MOTORSPORT mentioned on LINKS.

Didn't know that, I have a Very modified 1800 Escort Sump and the DOHC starter was the first one I tried !, Raceline sump is nice but frankly not worth the cost !

Depends whether you intend competing and keeping your engine in one piece  It's not the pretty outside that's important --- it's the high capacity very well baffled yet shallow depth ; level with the bellhosing base.

Stealing back my own topic,

Is this the type of bearing a spigot bearing is? ie open rollers? Or does it have to be a closed bearing?

Found the bloody thing. Darn difficult though. Ford dealers in Belgium don't carry the part anymore, aftermarket stores only in backorder and bloody expensive.

So started calling bearing suppliers and actually found one that still has 6.
They're 15*21*18 with a oil seal at 1 side. And priced at 5£.

So if someone else want's one, let me know before next week and I take it with me to Llandow.
