Windscreen Fitting

I'm considering fitting the windscreen before the body is painted and before I bond in the tubes to strengthen the A pillars. I hope to get a better fit while the screen frame is more flexible, and get better adhesion straight to the GRP rather than to a painted surface. Then mask and paint, then apply the rubber strip to cover the join neatly.

Is this a good idea or is it better to have a rigid frame to push against to bed the sealant properly?

I'd leave it to the pro's, I had autowindscreens come out and spend over 3 hours fitting mine, it was a real sod of a job as the frame is based on the elite that was ment to hold the screen in by the rubbers.

If posible get them to supply the windscreen first so that you can bend/mould the frame to be a perfect fit and then strengthen, they can then bond it in place a lot easier, I think you'll need a rigid frame to get it to bond properly otherwise it will try to flex away from the screen (it takes a good few hours for the agent to set).

I'd defintately strengthen the screen surround before fitting the screen.

The other thing is that as you are bonding in a rubber seal screen you need to get whoever's fitting the screen to paint a mask on the outside edge of the screen . It needs to be a good 1-2" all the way around or it will be a bit messy (like mine)

I got a local fitter to do mine. He had to cut the screen down to fit.
I am not sure why (other than it didnt fit). I spoke to PP at the time as all the apatures should be the same size. Yes - screen was the correct item & part no, so it may just have been the way he fitted it.

Only 1 problem. The screen has started to delaminate in the corner (TVR style). This is possibly because the edge may not have been sealed?

But I believe its worth getting it done by a pro.

For the record, National Windscreens who are on the trading estate up the road want £220.00 + VAT to fit a top-tinted screen.

Going to shop around at that price. Watch this space.

Try this lot I phoned and he quoted about £70 for a screen. Ricky Evans Motorsport, 01827283688. not fitted though just supply.

i got my screen from tim, with a heater matrix in it to save fitting a heater in my car for £220 including postage and the fitting kit. the instructions were good and i fitted it after painting. it was easy to fit and i just used a few G clamps and some large blocks of wood to spread the weight whilst holding the screen in place while the adhesive dried. its such an easy job if you can build the rest of the car you shouldn't struggle with this at all i think!

Got a screen from uroscreens via ebay, (see parts for sale). It doesnt fit. The bottom corners dont seem curl in enough. Is this a problem with the body moulding others have encountered, or shall I take it back?

Does the fury of the phoenix use the same screen or is it another one? If they use the same, I would look there for one.

The fury uses the same screen. Hence why the dash fits in the stylus too!

mine didn't seem a great fit, it's amazing how well the bonding stuff fills the gaps + the molding is quite subjective.

You really must put an alloy 13mm tube or rod around the screen and down below dashboard level then glass it in very securely especially at the base , left and right.Cut the screen mould out to leave 25mm max and leave it to a good professional to fit , using 2 transit rubbers. They are the only ones to do the job well. Also before the guy fitted mine , I wedged a piece of 2 x 2 from boot front to screen top to help with fitting. Stops it flexing while pressure's being applied.Mines been in since 1999 without problems of any kind.

Just as an alternative - mine was fitted (also in 1999) without any rubbers, was fitted by a pro just using Sikaflex type mastic.
I had to clean up the edges of the mastic as it dried but looks great - again no problems in 9 years....
When filling my screen surround, I added a length of twisted pair wire into the filler so that if I ever wanted to add a radio, the ariel was already in place and removed the need to stick one projecting out of the bodywork somewhere. (now I realize that the engine on full blat is much more pleasureable than any radio station!!!!)

All the professionals stick it on with mastic but the transit rubbers are there purely for ' finish '

I'd like to remind you of my earlier post.
My screen required cutting to make it fit (the fitters will do this). The transit rubber is to hide the gaps between glass & frame.
Your best getting it done by a pro.
