Re: XMAS 2009 !
We do have just a thin layer down here too well --- 6 inches Nobody seems to be able to drive sensibly through it though , all abandoning their cars making it almost impossible for gritters and snow ploughs to get around The A41 nr Tring was closed with just 6 inches of snow --- cars were all over the place
I know I'm bloody old but we had none of this rubbish with roads closed etc etc in the fifty's and sixty's when a foot of snow was normal and sometimes two feet & -10 degrees for months . Salt wasn't used , the roads just got snow ploughed along the main roads , people drove accordingly although treads were wider apart plus tyres were narrower. Grit was spread on the ploughed compacted 2 or 3 inches of snow left on the tarmac.
Local farmers had contracts from the council to snow plough whenever necessary in our area --- I know that because my mate used to call into our house during the night for coffee with some ''power'' in it
I had a Mini Pick-up at the time and never got stuck night or day -- ever In 1960 heaped snow from the winter was still melting down to 2 feet high piles in June
OK --- rant over
