Rear Exit Exhaust
Rear Exit Exhaust
I've had a search but not found any info on what I would "ideally" like to do with my exhaust.
I've read plenty about side exit ehausts on the Stylus but cant see anything on rear exit with the pipe going through the sill over the rear axle and into the back box, instead of the under floor option I currently have.
Has anyone done it and kept the silencer at the rear? As I dont fancy cutting the sill and having a big silencer sticking out.
Also I assume having just a pipe down the sill will reduce the fire risk compared to a silencer in there.
Getting the pipe down there post build might be a little tricky I guess and supporting it, putting the required heat mat down there might be difficult too.
Thoughts anyone? Its all in the "ideas" stage at the moment I just dont like my exceeding low pipe under the passenger seat.

Can't see how you'd connect to a ' back box ' via down the sill and over the wheel --- suspension arms , vertical movement etc etc You could probably put a nice long box behind the fuel tank with two exit pipes , one each end through 100mm holes in the f/glass rear valance . Sikaflex really thick heat mat across the tanks rear . Personally , if I wanted the silencer across the back , I'd have it in stainless then expose it rearwards , either by cutting a nice rounded shape out or possibly '' sharks gills '' 50mm wide and 300mm high all along the valance .CMA wrote:I've had a search but not found any info on what I would "ideally" like to do with my exhaust.

Remember that just as important as heat mat ---- is air flow , if not more so . Same along the side sill where you intend running the pipe . If you don't fancy sharks gills along the side then at least cut very large holes all the way along the underside . It works like blowing across the top of a bottle to draw heat out and fresh cooler air in from the front. I have 100mm holes under both front sills to help cool the engine bay but you can't see them from the side in photos

As I said it was an idea, having now had a look under the car I can see the problem, perhaps I should look before I post. I blame last nights wine....
My current back box already sits lower than the bodywork at the rear anyway due to the tank used. Looks like I will have to consider a side exit one then when the time comes (prob at the same time as a zetec)

I had rear exit for 7 years - changing to side exit was so worth it.
1) I could lower the car
2) I got through the dB test at Oulton in stead of getting thrown off for being too noisy as I did before
3) I now go over speed ramps without having to clench my arse cheeks
do it, its worth the hassle / expense IMHO

you dont need to cut any holes in the side for a side exit exhaust i changed my exhaust to a standard westfield item to fit a cross flow item mine sits neatly infront of the nearside rear tyre with part of the end can bend cut off to miss wheel, you cant see it at all from the side.

Inside the sill is risky --- overheating f/glass can self ignite in seconds and the complete car dissappear in 10 minutes flat , I've seen happen

My silencer is within the sill and the interior part of the chassis and carpet got very hot, the outer sill has a 6inx3in hole in it and the silencer has a wrap on it but still hot, so i found at work some alloy tubing (hotair pipe used between a exhaust manifold and air filter box) and routed it from under front rad frame facing into the wind and routed under the chassis and wishbone then up and into the cut out where the downpipe enters the front part of sill, this has taken the heat away (when driving)especially in the summer it is so effective its started blowing the exhaust wrap off the silencer and Marnie does not burn her handbag oh and leg.

I would NEVER wrap the exhaust or silencer --- all it does is increase the heat at any point NOT wraped What's needed is space around every part of the exhaust system plus huge airflow to remove heat HENCE exposing the silencer and cutting very large holes underneath the body sill area from front to rear

Flipper 123 you say "i changed my exhaust to a standard westfield item", how much of the system did you fit? what engine do you have, and did you have to modify anything?

hi, pete
its a crossflow engine, i had to remove the diagonal cross brace where the original exhaust went under it i removed the round tube and replaced it about an inch higher and re fixed the mountings where they were closest to the chassis.

hey rob it was running in there before i changed the exhaust to the westfield one. i guess id better drill some holes.maybe get a new silencer? more bloody money eh.
