Setting up the car with Rob

Post by pigeondave »

This weekend I went to see Rob to get my ride heights, corner weights and geometry checked.

I thought that I put this up here just to give people an idea of what goes on and what I'm running so that they don't make the same mistakes as me. When buying new dampers and springs.
The slight difference is that I've got a Fury.
My weight 18st 3lbs.
My front springs are 225lbs and the rear are 180lbs. All 8" long.
I have 12.5inch Pro-tech shocks all around.

The car arrived at Rob's with a very small rake if any without the driver.
Our first job was to get the car to have a bit of rake with no driver. From previous experience Rob was expecting a 18-20mm drop with an 18st driver.
The car was set up so that there would be a 10mm rake with me sat in it.
This is where we found a few problems.

Firstly the new Protech spring seats have holes in them so that you can just jam anything that fits in the holes and wind the platforms up.
Finding something that fits snugly that doesn't snap half way through the job was difficult.

Secondly I have got 180lbs springs on the rear. When I sit in the car it drops 25mm. This is due to the spring poundage and nothing to do with me being heavy
Winding the platforms up as much as we could still did not give the rake that we were looking for. Ideally for the rears I should have gone for 13.5 inch dampers or heavier springs.

Thirdly the front springs are too long. With a sump clearance of 104mm (Dunnell sump on a blacktop zetec) the spring platforms are all the way down to the bottom.

So with the front down as far as it would go (it could go down another 4mm but the springs are too long) and the back as high as we could get it (turny tool kept snapping) we ended up with a rake of 7mm after it was corner weighted.

Then we moved one to the camber and toe.
We were lucky with the camber as undoing the lower offside balljoint and giving it a twist (one full turn) gave good enough results. One side has 1.1 and the other has 0.9 degrees camber.
This is good enough for me until the winter mods are started (rose joints on the lower arms).

Rob set the toe just slightly in. Its 2mm @ 14" in front of the car.

The ARB was also connected. There is a slight issue with the drop link and the zetec blacktop water pump pulley but that was resolved.

Driving the car after the day at Robs is far nicer. The front end grips and grips and feels a lot more planted.
It damper setting need to be reviewed but that is more of a personal taste issue. Robs set up is for a more track focused car. I want to tour with the car and do occasional track days. So I'll be softening the dampers a few clicks.

Altogether a very very good day I learnt a lot and now have the confidence to fiddle a bit myself, as I now have a base setting.
Rob was great to work with and explained everything clearly. Lunch was good and the cups of tea were endless.

Big thanks to Rob and I hope the few Fury people that come here have learnt a bit. (possibly 7" front springs on 12.5" dampers and 13.5" dampers with 180lbs or heavier springs on the rear)

Rob,
I phoned Protech and they do an extended eye. They need to know the piston diameter and the brush dia.
So I will be able to get 13.5" dampers on the rear without having to buy a new pair.
They also said that the dampers are sent out on the middle range so the fronts are on 4 clicks which is actually 13+4.
Hence the rough ride on the concrete motorway.

That's just what I hoped was the problem --- it seemed bonkers to get a rough ride on a 4 f 7 r clicks setting . So riding on 17 clicks was almost 44% not the 25 to 33 % I normally start at . So the rear was almost 52% which I'd stick to . The fronts would be ideal at a 1 click of the middle range which equals 33% of the total 39 clicks OR --- 12 to 13 clicks of range ONE .
