Your first point re - lengths between wheels side to side .
A well known French manufacturer , as a matter of course , designed the rear drivers side wheel around 30mm's rearwards of the kerbside rear wheel . It was quite simply to accomodate space for another component :o These little front wheel drive 1.9 GTI 's were very successful in all Motorsport diciplines without any problems .

Tub mounting wise ---- many of us including me got our tubs mounted off centre . Tim's build manual on this site shows a very good method to avoid this HOWEVER I simply did a little arch mod' to deal with it and very few ever notice that one arch is wider than the other ---- not often does anyone look exactly in the rear body centerline to see it :wink:
