Done some research on the diffrences between the Nissan 5 speed and the 6 speed ratios, (S14 to S15), and decided on the 5 speed, 4 to 5 hundred pound sheaper, but the issue was the ratio's.
For all practical purposes 5th on the 5 speed is same as 6th on the 6 speed, and 4th on the 5 speed same as 5th on the 6 speed. So the differnce is 4 gears in to the place of 1st, 2nd and 3rd on the 5 speed, the effect of this is to shorten 1st gear, the 6 speed with my diff would give 4.85 MPH per 100rpm , far to short for a car of the weight of my Phoenix. My old box give 5.14 and would break traction off the line easily. The 5 speed gives a more realistic 5.3 Mph per 1000.
I reakon that the extra torque from the lower gearing of the 6 speed, would increase the risk of wheel spin and together with the time for the extra change would actually be slower off the line than the 5 speed.
In the top 3 gears, which are what are used at Sepang, and assuming a 7000 rpm gear change the change from 5th to 6th, drops the rev's to 5300, were as 4th to 5th on the 5 speed only drops to 5800, so the 5 speed stays within the power band better in the gears I'll use most.
Any one want to argue with me and tell me I've made the wrong decission? (quickly please as I've ordered the 5 speed).
Jasper, My mechanic thinks that as I've gone 5 speed he can do the whole supply and instalation for the 1800 pound I've paid.
