As the roads seem to be getting worse and the bills (insurance/tax) are going up, I was considering only using the car on track/test days and competition. How do you register a race car? does it have an IVA or just scrutineering?

Join your chosen motorclub associated with the MSA then contact a scrutinneer via that club who's on the MSA blue book list . He will then want to see the car either at your home or a place he decides. After inspection he'll give you tips on why he failed it ---- ha ha ha . A log book will follow if he's happy .

Rob's the one to ask, as he's been there, done that.

For competition you'll need to have the car inspected by a registered MSA scrutineer (of the appropriate discipline - rally, race, speed), so that an MSA competition logbook can be issued for the car.
MSA scrute's are named with contact info in the back of the MSA Blue Book.
Obviously the car needs to properly maintained, and have the appropraite kit fitted in order to pass, again depending on what type of event you're planning on doing. eg roll bar or full cage at correct height, throttle return springs, harnesses (& mounting points), seats & mountings, noise, fire extinguishers, control tyres, etc.
There must be a fee for this, but not done it, so I don't know how much !

If you are intending to compete, & if you haven't already, you'll need to join you local MSA club, get the right competiton licence, etc. Your local club probably have the scrute guys you need as members, so a good idea to go that route.

Thinking sprint/hillclimb SPEED events, the downside to your plan... if you aren't entering a "Road Going" class where road tax, insurance, MOT is required... you'll find yourself in the upper categories of "Sports Libre", which is slicks & wings, proper race cars, very experienced drivers, and a RACE or SPEED 'A' licence required.

Track Days can get complicated as most trackday companies expect "road type cars" only, and be limited to 98dbs noise.
If you look at Test Days, these are more track car oriented & often have a 105db noise limit.

Another little job for our FDMC tame scrutineer , Jim Morris --- also a ' mean ' driver in rally and sprint diciplines . Not sure where in the UK the above member lives though ?
The car will need to look clean underneath and bodywise and be very tidy under the bonnet ie , obviously very well maintained. A roll bar or cage depending on class that is at least 50mm's above your head when seated and helmet on , more is better / mine is 5 inches . Appropriate fire extinguisher fixed or automated .
Although safety is the ' password ' , scrut's are happy when the car looks visually good --- I think because they then make an assumption that build quality and other things that can't easily be seen are also 100%

Hi, i have pasted the MSA regs below.

CCLBs are available from International, (CCLB = competition Car Log Book) kp
National ‘A’ or National ‘B’ Scrutineers. Vehicle
inspections can be arranged by appointment with an
appropriate local scrutineer.

2.1.2. To obtain a log book, a registration document
(where appropriate) of the vehicle, or vehicle identity
number is required. A recent good quality colour print
photograph (not Polaroid) showing the car static,
unoccupied and in tyre contact with the ground must
be affixed to the CCLB. Single seat racing cars must be
shown side elevation, whilst other categories must
show a side front three quarter view to show the side
profile and front of the vehicle with the number plate
legible.
CCLB continuation sheets may be obtained from the MSA.

I have checked mine & you dont need to be a member of a club.
It does ask for discipine though. I suggest "Sprint/Hillclimb" as you will not need - dated harnesses, or fire extinguisher, cut off switch.

Doesnt cost much & the scrutineer may just ask you to take the car to a local event for ease.

I needed a fire extinguisher and already had a cut off switch but that's why it's a wise thing to join a club as others can help you decide what class to enter and therefore the rules for each class . A chat with your chosen club's scrutineer could save you money regarding buying what has to be fitted

No point having a car with a CCLB, unless you are intending to compete.
And to compete you have to have a MSA licence & be a member of an MSA Club.

Otherwise, if you're trying to save £££ just put the car on trailer & take it to a trackday that isn't asking you to produce the "road legal" documents at signing on.
