Morning gents.

What clutch cable do you run with Zetec/Type 9? Assuming you haven't all gone hydraulic! I think I've still got the old MK2 Escort one, but I could do with one a touch longer as the bend is quite tight. It's also on the end of it's adjustment already, so I may need a spacer to hold it properly unless another cable has a slightly shorter inner?

Yeah I've heard of them before. I'm trying to avoid it though, £50ish vs. £10!

your cable sounds like the one I use, which is a Mk2.

Measure it and I'll measure the new cable I haven't used since going hydraulic clutch . I could post it to you if any good

I made a spacer for mine that held it about 40mm's away from the bell housing

It measures up as 755mm long, 195mm of which is exposed inner. Burton don't list the exposed inner cable length, but the total length matches the MK2 Escort X-Flow one, which makes sense for my car. It is also the shortest cable listed! If you aren't planning on going back to cable at any point could I buy the spacer off you Rob? Can you let me know how long your clutch cable is as well please?

The spacer is a very thick piece of ally billet and is still forming a cover plate for that part of my open ally bellhousing. I will measure the cable though

Just been out in the shed to measure it and it's 1020mm's of which the same 195mm's is cable in the open. That length includes the rubber at the pedal box end. Yours is very short so it must be curved rather tightly to fit

Fair enough! I'll drill out some nuts so they fit over the end of the cable. Cheaper and quicker than getting someone to lathe a spacer up for me.

It is curved rather tightly. And it has been rubbing on something as well which isn't ideal- not sure what, but I suspect it's cross flow shaped and now sat at the back of the garage! PM regarding the clutch cable coming your way.

I've fitted a Cortina one which comes with a round end and made a couple of plates to turn it into a clevis.

I fitted my new clutch cable yesterday, and it is greatly improved! I got the 'Clutch cable, Escort Mk2 RS 100cm LONG' from Burtons. The extra length gives a nice curve down to the bellhousing, and conveniently the inner is slightly shorter so no need for any spacers. I didn't measure the difference, but having them side by side it looked to be about 10mm ish.

Two quick Q's:
1, Should the cable be adjusted to give a small amount of free play before the release bearing contacts the clutch fingers? I.e., does the release bearing need to be spinning constantly or not?

2, Should there be a pedal stop fitted? There is a witness mark where my clutch pedal has been hitting and then sliding down the inside of the footwell. As I can't drive it at the moment I can't work out how much travel it needs for the clutch to release fully, so I thought I'd check with you lot!

As a progress update, I'm currently doing A LOT of wiring! I'm replacing the whole lot as it was a right old birds nest, and going from carb to injection it would have been a pain to sort through it all.
