Quick Q to those recently on the road:
How can you confirm whether you have 3 years before a mandated MOT? I'll probably get one beforehand for peace of mind, but if DVLA get itchy about it in a few months time, what is the proof for a Q-plate?

Incidently, the reason for a Q-plate comes down to nothing more than a mis-interpretation of the declaration form. I noted that "the parts, while new, would have originally fitted a ....". The clown at DVLA said that effectively I had declared the parts were new but then declared that I had taken them off vehicles, and I was lucky not to be investigated for making false declarations!!! The fastest way out was to take the Q-plate, but at that point I was just desperate.

If you'd stuck to your guns & got a new reg based on all new parts DVLA would consider it a new car & you'd get 3 years MOT exemption.

Q plate being "age & origin indeterminate" is subject to an annual MOT from day1 - so yep, you'll need a new ticket

Initiall I had the original registration of the donor car issued to me, it took a while to resolve, but after a few phone calls and speaking to more senior staff it was corrected; they issued me an age related plate and even refunded the cost to have registration plates made.

Regarding MOT, you shouldn't need one for three years if you get the registration corrected. Your local test station will be able to tell you when its due based on current registration status when they log into the DVLA system to start a test.
