Replacement top rocker arm needed

Post by spegru »

I was on my way to sunny Brands Hatch, and stopped for a look due to some funny noises from the front.
My left rocker arm has failed! It now has a nasty kink where there wasn't one before.
Mine is a Peter Powell 1997 era type using Escort uprights.
Can anyone recommend a suitable source for a replacement?

I've got one but bet I know why it's bent . Your shock is wound down too low for it's piston length plus standard spring rates were' crap ' at 180lbs . They aren't sided , a rocker will fit left or right --- there's nowhere to source them , you just have to make them up . SSC has been closed to business since 2006/7 -- ish. I've been making bits for mine and others for 8 years on and off.
PM for my email and we can sort you out ok.
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

Thanks. That was posted from the pub car park where we waited for the AA. Home now and the left front is now even lower!

I really dont know why it bent - it's been at the same ride height for years.
It's the type which is all filled in & looking like solid. Looks like it would be a right pig to straighten and I don't know if i'd trust it again anyway
The AA man who trailered us home said it's split underneath too but I havent looked myself yet.

I was aware that theres been quite alot of discussion & work on the top arms and I did wonder if Neville Powell is still around or if a Fury or Striker one would do.

I'll PM you.....

Definitely FURY/STRIKER/PHOENIX wouldn't fit -- totally different bearing design and dimensions. Save the rocker though because the outer bent arm can be carefully cut off then a new outer arm fitted . I made a jig for multi ' length arms for various uses / not quite finished . Made up my own as one off's years ago so no jig(to use rodends). Neville Powell no longer has jigs for STYLUS cars , since Tim Benbow bought the company and still owns it (just not operating it).

Hi Rob, Hope you are enjoying retirement as much as me 8) . I saw you at Goodwood last year, but you were busy, so didn't get a chance to say hello. I tried posting in another section on here, hoping you may reply, and then noticed this thread. Do you by any chance have a contact number for Tim Benbow please? Together with an engineer friend of mine, who has worked with me on numerous cars since my V8 Stylus (BOT291V) back in about 2004/5, we are looking for a project. We would be interested in purchasing the rights/moulds/jigs etc for the Stylus, with a view to supplying kits and parts, and developing the car further. This would be more of a hobby than a business. My friend is very experienced with carbon fibre and glassfibre, and is an extremely competent mechanic/race engineer. Hope to hear from you. Regards, Paul.

I wouldn't give out his personal number -- sorry Paul . Also he's made other decisions recently so no point I'm afraid

Hi Rob, Sorry - I didn't expect you to give out his number, but wondered if he was contactable. That is a shame....does that mean the Stylus is dead, and the designs, moulds etc are going to waste? If so, it seems such a shame. Is there anything that could be salvaged perhaps via another route to resurrect it, or have others already tried? Regards, Paul.

If Tim wants to say something that's fine but it's not for me to discuss his affairs , he's been a friend for a long time and has kept in touch , so respect his privacy . Stylus won't go to waste though , all in good time we'll all know his plans.

That's a little blunt Rob. I'm not prying into Tim's affairs, purely trying to see if something can be done in a small way to save the Stylus. Anyway, glad to see that there may be a future. Over and out.
