Small step or giant leap?

Well the car took a step forward last week – I’ve bought an engine after much uming and arghing and changing of mind I finally opted for a CA18DET from a Nissan 200SX – because it was cheap! –Engine gearbox and everything else I could grab in a day from a crashed car for £250. So I’ve spent the last few days trying to get my head round wiring diagrams; annoyingly Nissan have 90% of the wiring you need to run the engine on a separate loom but the last 10% is a bit of a pain. I know a couple of people are already running this engine; any chance of some pictures of your install? – I’m particularly after images of engine mounts?

Nissan lump ?

Tim had Greg's ? in for suspension and other mod's recently , gnalist username ? That's a Nissan .

Going to pick it up later this week ...if you like Bikenuts I can grab some pics then before it goes off to Essex to get the head done?

If there's anything else you'd like then just holler...don't ask me anything too technical tho' as I didn't actually build it. :oops:

If you could get some pictures of the engine mounts, exhaust and area around the transmision tunnel I'd apreciate it. I think I know what I'm going to do but the more input the better.

I have the same engine and made engine mounts based on the design of the origanals for the xfow I removed.
Before I could get the box in I had to mod the tunnel to make it wider.

When I can work out how to post pics :oops: I will.

Thanks Iain, looks like a bit more work than I'd hoped for to the tranny tunnel but in for a penny in for a pound. Did I speak to you at Oulton Park last year? - I've got chassis No.11 and remember speaking to someone else with an early car they were rebuilding.

I replaced the lower rails both sides from 25 x 25 to 25 x12 and stole an extra 12mm or so out of the passenger foot well.

I would try the box in first to give you an idea. nothe the nissan is a tall engine so you may need a little more space.
I need to shorten the sump as it is very low.
I also went for the flip front as it was the only way I was foing to get it in and out.

Iain,

Thanks for the extra info. Have you got a bonnet bulge or has shortening the sump allowed the engine to fit under the standard bonnet? Hoe much did you take off the sump? I was thinking about adding wings to the sump anyway – less than a gallon of oil makes me feel nervous 

Incidentally CA18DET with all ancillaries including aircon compressor, engine loom, clutch, oil and even some water 146kg I’ll let you know how much I manage to strip off that. Gear box with oil 45Kg – about the same as a T-9 with a cast Iron bell housing but they will handle a lot of power – same basic box goes in 2WD Skylines.

I have not shortened the sump yet want it to run first.

I had to cut the bonnet (see below) to get tht bonnet to fit, this is the first hole I have cut I think to needs to be slightly bigger.
The rear edge of the cast air box is the heighest part of the engine
My bonnet had a some sort of foam on a hard back fiber glassed in so it was almost 1/2 in thick.
What ever I do I want to use the hole and on on the other side to draw some heet out but have not found a suitable bulge yet, may make one at a push.

Thanks again your photos have been very useful. Looking at the view of the sump it's not much lower than the bottom of the bell housing I think I might add a skid plate - catching the bellhousing on something might result in a rather suden stop!

When I got my prop made I had to take the box to make sure they got the correct end.
There seams to be 2 different spline patterns.
