Best place to get a hood

Post by Nissanman »

So the build it's nearing completion, it's off for body and paint on Monday (very excited!!!)

I'm going to need to get a hood for it. Does anybody know the price and quality difference between a hood from Tim and a Jill Judd custom hood?

All I do know is that if you go to Jill Judd , she will need the top rail that Tim supplies with the hood kit because he's the only one to have a pattern to fit the screen  Also hood bars to suit unless you make them yourself :?: I've got one of Tim's fitted to the green Stylus I'm renovating so if you fancied the drive you could give it a look over  I imagine Tim's will be cheaper as it's a kit unless he fits it and J.J's will be well done but expensive . She quoted me for a half hood if I supplied the top rail at £200-00p taking into account it would be an experiment , having no developement on our cars.

Tim wants £465 for mohair, £395 for vinyl, which seems like a lot of money, but it does come with all fitting parts.

If Jill is quoting £200 for a basic half hood without supports then there's no way a full hood is going to be less than Tims as the back bit is the complicated bit.

How's the quality of Tims hood?

Quality

Post by stylussprinter »

I don't have experience of hoods on my own car but this car I've just bought has a hood and I'd say it was good quality but poorly fitted. So much is down to the builder how it turns out. Before fitting my windscreen , I put an alloy bar around the screen edge glassed in BUT the key thing is to think ahead regarding hood fixing. On my own car, around the bar about 8 inches from each end of the screen , I folded a peice of thin steel like a sandwich which obviuosly got glassed in with the alloy bar. Then when you come to drill holes for hood fixing , the bolts won't wear through the fibre glass , leaving slots.
This is what's happened on the car I'm fettling  It's not a great driving experience with a hood anyway but a good emergency backstop. If I were making/fitting a hood from scratch on my own car then I'd make the middle hoop 25mm higher just to get the water running off better once parked. The hood is almost flat on this one. You could simply make the alloy plate higher and have two holes. Lower rear / higher middle hoop bolt. OR --- if the ends of the hoop are long enough -- drill another lower hole.
NEEDS thinking about before you rush to cut the material at the screen end -- take your time  Rob.

Thanks Rob - useful info as always :)

I'm gonna need a hood as it's a long distance machine for Rally's, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

It's gonna be 1970's Japanese racing white, a nice cool off white, with anthracite grey stripes over the bonnet, and anthracite grey 5 spoke Classic Revolution alloys with polished rims, then the interior will be a combination of grey and black.

Not very exciting I know - but should have a nice retro look to it - with a bloody great modern Jap engine under the bonnet!!

The body work guy is as we speak trying to figure out how to do the bonnet bulge and wheel arches.

As soon as the wheels arrive (mid-May) it will be up to Surrey rolling road to have the ECU mapped and the boost controller set up by a man who knows what's he's doing (not me   ).

Like these but dark grey...

rules ?

Is it first at the post wins OR a more complicated being on time --- neither early nor late :?:
Navigator's job sounds a nightmare if it's the latter

First at the post wins would be an all out road rally - not a good idea on open roads No, it's a timed event where you have to arrive at each check point within a 1 minute time slot - so yes, a complete nightmare for the navigator!!
