Well my funds landed in my main account this evening so I emailed the guy who is selling me his Stylus (rather reluctantly I think )
The bad news it that I won't be able to go get it until Monday. I had planned to take it with me a couple of places on the weekend but never mind. It elaves more time to clear space in the garage.

Apart from insurance and a full tank of fuel is there anything I should have to hand when I collect the car?
Anything major I should check out before going out on my first drives too?

Oh, yeah the cash too - nearly forgot that

As with all second hand car purchases I'd take a good set of tools and an AA card on the first few journeys

especialy if it hasn't been used regularly, generally you get a few niggles i.e. fuses or fluid seals playing up on stood kits.


Enjoy it and most of all take your time to get used to it before thrashing, it's usually in the first couple of months that people crash if they are going to, purely by being surprised by the driving characteristic (don't know your car history, but unless you have had a 7 or a go kart it'll be very different to anything else you have tried!)

Yeah the diesel fiesta won't really compare

I need to arrange breakdown recovery, how do the AA fare with regards kit cars?
(I can get £20 cashback via Quidco by joining online.)

If I were you I'd jack the car up and have a carefull look at (1)the front end suspension/wishbones/bolts tight/brakes/shock adjuster works &grease rockers (2)the rear end suspension/bolts tight/shock adjuster works and look for slack in the prop' u/j's then grease if ok.
While at the rear check that the lower trailing arms(on which shocks attach)are straight --- ie. not bent
Then if all seems ok , check water/oil/brake fluid level . Set tyres 18psi max.

don't care at all, they cover the person not the car.

I read about the bent lower trailing arms etc.
So yeah I'll check all that!

On a more serious note I'd try and take the following :

In the boot:

warning triangle
Hi vis vest
Multimeter
Needle nose pliers
small and large adjustable spanner
Pipe wrench
screw drivers posi and flat
15 17 19mm spanners
knife
1/4" or 3/8" ratchet
spare fuses
Can of tyre weld
wire strippers and selection of crimps
insulating tape
torch

In the car:

A5 size roadmap
fire extinguisher
shammy/microfibre cloth (for plugging leaks when it rains)
more duct tape

Which is pretty much what I put in the car for long trips.

About the fire extinguisher - I'm under no illusions about fighting a fire in the car. If it catches fire - let it burn. I've seen photos of a GRP cobra rep that caught fire - within 2 minutes the car was fully ablaze. Heat was so intense it melted the cylinder heads.
