wheels + tyres
wheels + tyres
Where is the best place to get minilight style wheels? I like the ones that have the machined rim on them too.
What size was Tim putting on the latest cars? i think it was 15" x 5.5"?
What are the best tyres to use for road and occasional track? There were some ones that the caterham guys used that Tim really recommened?
Cheers

Re: wheels + tyres
Tyres are Avon CR500's, as for wheels you can save a lot of weight on the correct choice of wheels, minilights are not that light plus everyone seems to have them but it is personal choice as for rim size 15x7 then you can run 195s or 205s.Pete&Matt wrote:Where is the best place to get minilight style wheels? size
They'll be 14 x 6 which is what Pete.P. always put on as standard. 13inch wheels give a wide choice of tyres and are very light. Even so , I'd go for 15 x 7 . If you want a good safe road tyre wet/dry then the A021 YOKO is the one to go for plus it will grip on track wet or dry. If you only really take your pride and joy out in the dry then go for YOKO A032,A048,TOYO R888 . These will grip like hell but be careful in a shower/damp and VERY careful in standing water Tim liked the CR500's though for road or track.
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

just been speaking with Demon Tweeks. The A021 are only avaliable in 225/50 X 15 at a cost of £146 + VAt each!!!
He recommeneded the R888's for our intention, but they dont like standing water apparantly, but are £64+VAT each, which is far better!
Looking at superlite wheels as they are much cheaper than other brands at the mo!

YOKO's
If you buy YOKO's there's only one place to go -- GEORGE POLLEY MOTORSPORT If you fit R888's then be very careful when -- braking -- turning the wheel in the wet

225 's
You don't really want 225's on 7 inch rims . At some point , climbing up in section width , the ' footprint ' will no longer be flat . I.E. too wide and the tread footprint will be convex --- 225 on a 7 inch may measure 6 or less on the ground so no gain
On ' 7 ' rims -- 195 , 205 or 215 . Ask at a fitting or supplying company to check . Also the wall of the tyre will be VERY close to the shock using 225 's on the rears IF not touching it Whatever tyre size you use will effect the set up .As I've said many times on other threads TYRES , PRESSURES , SPRINGS , SHOCKS , RIDE HEIGHT & WEDGE all effect car behaviour so no one can give you a definitive instruction at arms length. Driving a car myself will tell me what to do BUT not receiving that info via another
EG. If you fitted 195's front and 215's rear , I'd expect it to understeer , assuming average camber/toe and a 15mm wedge -- for example . If you upped the wedge , understeer would decrease BUT all the other things mentioned play a part too .
Sorry but it's a black art
