Can someone explain the steering column to me

I assume that i have the original steering column in the car. I am a ilttle confused by the steering column. The shaft that goes down the middle of the outer casing has a spring at each end which is compressed when the steering wheel is bolted on. There is a split pit at the lower end holding the spring cap on. Is this normal, I assume its the collapsable type column.

My nesxt question is how do i attach the sierra stalks! any ideas?

I don't have a Stylus but from memory of my Cat the column sounds right.
The column switches are held on IIRC by 2 M5 screws on each side top and bottom from the side and screw into brackets on the column.

i have kinda given up on that bit for the moment, i have got myself a sierra column switch gear set but i dont have a sierra column, (mk2 escort) and i gave up trying to think of ways to fit the aliminium bit to the escort column.

I may try to get a sierra column and fit that.

Thanks for the piccy
