4AGE RWD conversion

We have a chassis nearly ready to fit engine and gearbox etc. The engine we have is a 4AGE and we are trying to decide on options for the gearbox. We have a ford type 9 box which we got for free and is known to be ok as we drove it before taking it out of a seirra. So the plan is to buy a RAW conversion bellhousing/clutch kit and use the ford box. Or is it better to find a T50 box and use that. The problem is availablity of the T50 and price.

What have other people done with their 4AGE's. Any comment or suggestions.

What starter motor do we need? Not sure which one to get.

Cheers,

Pete & Matt Loveless

I know that speedon is putting a 4age in the old democar of SSC. And they are the dutch dealer for the Raw Striker and they only work with toyota 4age, also import them.
So they have a lot of knowledge about the options.

Mischa is not very active on this board, but you can send him a PM.

We finally got some advice from somebody who runs a RWD Corolla rally car. He doesn't rate the T50 Toyota box and runs Ford T9. So we are going for the RAW conversion kit and staying with the Ford box.

I seem to recall Pete having problems with the Toyota unit about 3 years ago, so they went over to the Duratec, or are the problems sorted now? It would be a shame to have to negotiate the same expensive learing-curve twice ?

The 4AGE has a good reputation for being tough and reliable so we are happy with the choice of engine. We plan to run it pretty much as standard but on carbs. I don't know of any specific problems with the 4AGE. If someone could shed some light on the issues Pete had then it could be useful.

Talk to Tim , he'll tell you all about it as he was the unfortunate driver on track who had to put up with both failures ------- basically blew up mate ! and the engine builder had no answers ----- Pete even less.
Rob.(keep plenty of oil in it -- especially round the corners)
