Large silencer

Post by mikeb »

Has anyone fitted a 6'' silencer to a classic. How well does it fit? I realise that the sill will have to be cut. Rob I can't remember if yours is 5'' or 6'' can?

Yes Mike , mine's a 6 inch but you'll need a ' dog-leg ' from your collector to the silencer (welded onto the silencer actually) to get the silencer to fit nicely away from the chassis and stay parallel to the outer body for esthetics .
I cut the top edge of the f/glass silencer hole , just 2 inches below the bottom door sill . Then the curved f/glass sill all the way underneath to the chassis --- cutting off the alloy 2 inch ledge also. I left about an inch or so in front of the rear wheel for esthetics and about 8 inches forward from the door hinge shut line . Under the sill , forward of the door hinge , I cut 4 x 96mm diam' holes .
Someone else has a diagram of the dog-leg required that I measured up for them ---- norma :?: :?: :?:
This way there's loads of air circulating in front and all around the silencer so no risk of fire from hot f/glass . The gap between the f/glass below the door and the top edge of the silencer is about 15mm . This is of course only a 4mm f/glass edge which is that close. Don't skimp on cutting it out though , it needs loads of air/fast around it for safety Mike.
If you want pic's I'll email you direct . They've been on here before somewhere for someone else to pattern from  PM me with your email address ok

Oh and I'd like to add (for Rob's sake  ) my silencer mountings have remained intact for the last 3000 miles including track use, and have not sheared off as I was told they would..... (Sorry Rob, couldn't resist! )
