Hi, you may have seen my earlier post regarding my SVA test pass.
Just to update you I have now got the Stylus registered with the DVLA and have been issued with an age related plate. The process was quite straight forward as detailed below.

1. I contacted the DVLA in Swansea who sent me out a pack with all the relevant forms and paperwork to register my Stylus as a “kit conversion” i.e. using a new chassis and body with the majority of the other components coming from a donor vehicle, in my case a MK11 Escort on a 1978 R plate to register the car with an age related plate.The DVLA classes a “kit car” as a kit of brand new components , in this case the car would be registered as a new car and would be issued with a current registration mark.

2. I filled in all the forms and took them to my local DVLA offices in Newcastle along with proof of ID, insurance certificate, log book from the Escort and receipts for the kit.

3. The local DVLA office wanted to inspect the car so I organised a break down truck to take it in as I did not want to run the risk of getting stopped by the police for having no number plates or tax which in turn would have made my insurance invalid ( I took out a one day fully comp cover over and above my build up fire and theft cover). You can drive your unregistered car to a pre booked SVA test but not to the DVLA inspection.

4. The DVLA inspection was very straight forward, they checked the chassis number, I used the 8 digit SSC number issued when I bought the kit, I had the number stamped into the chassis and also made up 2 VIN plates pop riveted to the chassis and pedal box cover. This was accepted by the DVLA, I have heard that some DVLA offices will not accept the SSC 8 digit number and insist on issuing their own chassis number.

5. The rest of he inspection included checking the engine number and answering a few questions to confirm that all of the other major components came from my donor Escort.

6. When I bought the donor Escort I registered it with the DVLA then scrapped it and informed the DVLA therefore I did not have the log book to prove where the donor parts came from, however I had kept the tear off portions of the old log books when I registered and scrapped the Escort. Because of this lack of log book all my paperwork was sent off to the DVLA in Swansea for double checking.

7. It all worked out OK and on 01/11/08 the Stylus was issued with an age related plate, 1978 R reg. They send you a tax disc and a certificate which allows you to buy a set of number plates.

8. The car is now insured through Heritage at a very reasonable premium, all I have to do now is buy a set of plates.

9. I assume at some point in time I will be issued with a V5 log book from the DVLA in Swansea.

10. To the best of my knowledge the car does not need an MOT for 3 years.

Well, I drove my unregistered kit to MOT & to DVLA on pre-booked appointments. Then later to SVA, & the SVA retest.
All insured on the the car chassis number only. Had a letter from DVLA that said this was OK, just in case I was stopped.
All in all around 200 miles without number plates.
Was 6 years ago though, things might have changed !

If its age related I think it still needs an MOT after one year,
If it's on a new plate (& therefore built from new parts), then its deemed to be a new car & get's the three years grace.

yes you are correct. only on a new registration plate do you get 3 years grace with the MOT. otherwise its every year unfortunately. i drove my car to the mot and sva tests and also a booked appointment with my local dvla office. this was cleared with the dvla and also with my local bobby! also my insurance company were aware of the journey and were happy to insure all of it on just the chassis number!

i've got my next MOT tomorrow as my car has been in the garage for just over a year now. basically since the track day last year. its time to blow away the cobwebs!

I think you will find that it should be 3 years from first registration date and then each year after that, the fact that it is registered on an age related plate doesn't come into it. Personally I would do it every year in any case just to get an independant eye over the car.

yep if its on a new registration plate or on a Q registered plate you wont need a mot for 3years, it becomes a wee bit sticky when it come to age related plates, as some say you need mot some say you dont?age related genneraly needs to go for an mot every year!due to reg being pre registerd before, but if you look at your v5 reg when you get it ,it will say on it date of first registerd so when you goto tax it and they ask you for mot? say its a new car! dont need mot only registerd whenever you got it done...hope this helps
