handbrake cable routing

Hello All, wonder if I ask for your expertise regarding the routing of the handbrake cable on a classic. Mine runs from the handbrake down and round a "pulley" (actually two washers with a spacer between them), and then turn into the tunnel and round a pulley mounted horizontally in the centre of the tunnel before linking up to the horse shoe shaped "balance bar" located under the diff.

The problem with this arrangement is that it requires quite a long open slot in the chassis panelling where the cable enters to tunnel, and also the cable outer has been removed by the cable rubbing on the improvised pulley. Any suggestions or pics of a better solution would be really useful. I've noticed that there is a slot in the tunnel side of the passenger seat tub which looks like it might be intended as an exit for the cable??

Having a long slot in the alloy panelling won't cause much of a problem. Mine's like that and no water/muck seems to get in. As for the improvised pulley, why not get a proper pulley? I used a plastic one from RS, like this:

In fact on mine I removed the bearing from the centre and bolted it up tight to save space, but because the pulley is slippery plastic it's quite kind to the cable.

On the live axle model it's done this way:

entering cockpit

in the tunnel
in the tunnel

Jeff, thanks for the reply. I think I'll get a couple of those pulleys. As you say they won't be so hard on the cable. I'm glad to hear that water ingress isn't a problem with ths set up.

Werner, many thanks for the pics. perfect! I'll make sure i don't weld a plate over that slot in the seat tub. I might take this option if the pulleys don't work out. Once i get this sorted I can get on with cutting new ally panels for the tunnel sides and top :)

Cheers

Kev

I had to put a "glide" over the box section that the cable runs across for sva. Otherwise same as Werners photos.

As an electrician I used 1/2" of plastic conduit with washers on each side for the pulley & cut open a 2" length of oval condit for the glide. Have to cover the hand brake & pully mechanism as the sva man told me a passenger or driver could hit their head on it!!

it may be worth your while converting to Tims development on the handbrake. The cable runs down the inside of the tunnel and no need to all the pulleys etc. Works very well. If you want pics, then let me know.

I wouldn't mind some pictures as not very kean on the pulley setup

That sounds interesting. If it's not too much trouble a couple of pics would be great.

PS: Jeff, I got a couple of pulleys just in case... delivered today :D
