Gurston 18th April

Post by kevp »

I entered yesterday’s hill climb at Gurston Down.
I was put in class A, which is road legal cars entered in the SBD championship (BARC). When the entry list came out I discovered I was the first runner!! It did enable me to leave early though. There were 5 cars in the class, BMW Z3M, Mini, Micra, Maxda Diesel.
Practice 1 = 48.81, 3rd in class, very damp & spinning up every where.
Practice 2 = 42.62, 2nd in class, Drying out
Timed 1 = 41.98, 3rd in Class, Dry now as it’s after lunch.
Timed 2 = 38.98, 2nd in class, Quite pleasant now & I’ve taken my coat off.
Very pleased with the time, but when I look at the Westfield’s & the like I’m some 4seconds off!? Not sure how it stacks up in the end results as clearly our group are different classes.
The points system is new. If you equal the circuit record for your class you get 20 points. For every 1 second/ 10th or 100th slower you are deducted 1/10th or 100th of a point. If you are faster & set a new record, you get extra bonus points on the same scale. My target time was 35s. So I think I get 15.02 points??
If anyone would like to study the results (which have the splits & speeds on) its http://tsl-timing.com/sprint/2009/91684.pdf

I did run a camera, but discovered it either wasn’t charged up or not enough memory, so I only have the 2nd practice recording. This goes on for 30 odd minutes, as I had to start & stop it from the Paddock. If I can edit it I will post.

Oh yeah, the wife now wants a go & is doing the Gurston school. So we may be double driving later in the year.

Kevin , that is excellent :D you beat my best time there 4 years ago of 39.85 sec's :) must try harder
They lump me in with sports libre up to 2lt so that time only got me 3rd in class against mallocks , visions etc. Just managed to pip a 23b replica on slicks.

Well done mate --- keep Stylus's in the public eye
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

 Should read 39.98

Haven’t entered any more as yet. But the dates are
Wiscombe 25th & 26 April. Can’t make this one
Bentwaters 17th May
Lydden 30 May
Pembrey 6 & 7 June
Abingdon 13 June
Castle Coombe 27 June
Llandow 18 July
Goodwood 22 August

There are a few "fly away" dates & may/june they are every weekend so Ill be selective. May well do Pembrey but Abingdon is good value with 2 courses & quite local.

Rob, I think we only meet at Abingdon (assuming we both enter).

That's still a very respectable time Kevin

Not sure which Championship your in --- ASWMC maybe :?:
It looks like the Wiscombe dates are the same plus Bentwaters and Abingdon .
Bentwaters is just too far unless you're chasing points and I'll never be ready for Wiscombe  With luck it's just possible I might make Abingdon :?

If I can't get myself an invite to Goodwood on the 22nd August , I'll come and support :D I'm a member of FDMC & BARC SW , so they may give me a whirl

eventually the video of Gurston Down second practice. No sound I'm afraid - well may be if you turn it up to max.

We are off to Pembrey this weekend (6th & 7th June). It will be the Liz's first go.
There is only 4 in our class, including us 2. A 4.5 TVR & 4.5 Westfield. So it looks like I'll be fighting with the wife over 3rd in class.

Don't know if I'll get any video as I have to apply in advance. Also the camera was fitted to the bike & a van did a right turn when he was alongside me on a roundabout.
£9k of damage to the bike alone. The camera wasn't on unfortionatly. http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/kev.padley/Aprilia#

Im fine Tony.

The labour cost of the bike repair was £250. The problem was the price of all the carbon fibre etc. Looking for a new bike (think it will be orange), but got enough spare panels to fix the old one anyway.

That's why there are so many engines around for BEC's

Yea. Aprilia RSV-R Edwards Rep. So was quite special.

Not many of these engines have been used in cars, as I believe they are very high. It is one of the most reliable bike engines though.
A typical second hand price of the Aprilia engine is £500. The Honda Fireblade is over double. Dont say anything to the wife about bike powered cars, as when she needed to replace her Fireblade engine the kit car demand pushed the price really high.

Its nearly time for our next event (Castle Combe on Saturday 27th) and I haven’t posted an update on the Pembrey event.

Well day 1, all went fine for the practice run, except I didn’t have any brakes!! The IVA man had only tested them 3 days before, so I am bemused at this. I handed over to Liz for her practice run – telling her to pump the brakes. The only time previous she had driven the car was at the Stylus Llandow day!! She went out unsure but got round ok. To recap there was 4 in my class. For some reason all the events I have entered so far wont let me in with the other kit cars, so Im in the modified – road going class. So a TVR Cerbera 4.5 & a Westfield 4.5, plus of course the wife, Liz.

1st Timed run. Our class was last to run & as we where sharing the Stylus the marshals jumped me in front of a few cars. The idea being that Liz could go straight out as the last runner without holding up the 2nd timed runs. It had started raining just as I was being queued up. So I thought by the time the others get to run the circuit will be well & truly wet. I could come a way with a stonking time- if only I hadn’t of spun!! I came in and told Liz I had spun, this feedback did not ease her. We had now bleed the brakes, so that was sorted. By now the place was running in water. Well I got the 3rd fastest time, Liz 4th. I was amazed at how good the A408’s are in the wet.

2nd timed Run. Much the same order, I was pushed out early. The rain hadn’t let up, so times were likely to be slower. Mine was better (obviously) but came second to the TVR who did an incredible time. The Westfield, driven by Anne 3rd, Liz 4th. At the end of the day Anne’s 1st timed run put me 3rd.

Day 2. After 24hrs of rain it started to ease off for our practice run. The TVR had gone home so only 3 of us today. Well Anne’s Westfield had a tuned engine & the car was built to sprint spec. She was unable to run A408’s in her championship (Westfield series) so I think she was on 888? Although she uses the A408’s on her road car!! She also did a few seasons racing before taking up speed events!!
For our timed runs the circuit was dry & indeed the rest of the day was very pleasant. I has trading places with Anne all day & each lap (all the runs where 1 & ¾ laps) by tenth of seconds. In the end I came out 1st by half a second, with a run that left me shaking for quite a while. In fact I tried taking a video of Liz going round, which is so funny as I couldn’t keep the camera pointing the same way.
Liz did very well, each of her runs got faster.

This is great news Kevin , congratulations to Liz too :D That's it , you've got the ' bug ' now :P Exactly what the STYLUS marque has needed for some time 8) With the marques being competed around the country successfully , it would have raised the sales potential for SSC if it was running , to benefit from the exposure :)
Are you a JPSC (JEREMY PHILLIPS SPORTSCAR CLUB)club member :?: if so you need to send a write up to David Penn who edits all motorsport reports on SYLVA marques .

Well done mate :P

By the way , what make are the A408 tyres :?: or is that a typo ' for YOKO A048's
Also I'd be interested to know whether you disconnected the ARB on one side at the bottom ---- for the very wet conditions --- I would have done , plus upped the tyre pressures 3 or 4 psi :?:

Simply undo the bolt then cable tie the loose link rod to the lever -- very slackly
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !
