exhaust tailpipe

Afternoon all,
Quick question before I go and spend some more money, is it OK for the tailpipe to stick out from the bodywork? I'm running a 5" silencer through the sill (or cill..) its an RT so should be OK and I'd like to stick the tailpipe out through a hole in the body work by 1/2" or so. Will this be OK for IVA?

Cheers
Pete

So long as the end is rolled back so its rounded off the required radius.

Some of the testers get sensitive about being able to walk into a hot silencer, and require a heat sheild/guard.
They might feel the same about a hot tail pipe, so you might be better cutting it off flush.

Other's will let you know how they got on for real !
(I changed mine after SVA)

An exhaust tailpipe must not project beyond the floor line lying directly above it by more than 10mm, unless it terminates in a radius of curvature of at least 2.5mm and in all cases project no more than 150mm. In the case of side mounted exhausts the tailpipe must terminate no more than 50mm from the extreme outer edge of the vehicle

from the iva manual

here is a copy of the manual

Like this but in the sill and a rounded pipe exit edge

I quite like that look.
Can you supply more details of size etc and where you got it from?
thx

It's about 22 inches long and 6 inches diameter including domed ends with a 2.75 inch through pipe. I got from my friend who aquired it from Steve Broughton SBD , as SBD were changing to a 7 inch silencer on their dyno at the time. As you can see it's repackable and was made by BTB in Daventry. BTB will make any size you require and sound test it to your bhp needs. I doubt you'll need a 2.75 inch through pipe though unless you have 230bhp plus.

Thanks for that.
One thing I am a little concerned about is the strength of the sill and/or body since right now it's rivetted to the floor.
Does the bottom of the door opening move if you lean on it?, and is there any sign of the front and rear body sections sagging?

On another point since I am primarily interested in road use, how does the sound compare to other setups, how does it depend on silencer packing and does the shorter pipe make it inevitably louder than a rear box? (a recording would be great!)

There's no problem with strength by cutting out that area as I've done . The door sill to silencer f/glass cut line is 50mm's which retains the strength --- absolutely no body sag , droop  The sound will be down to your power output . Mine has the large through pipe but the power is 231bhp plus the manifold is built to that power , so with my 6 inch silencer and the 2.75 inch pipe there's not much room for packing. If you don't plan that sort of power the the whole ball game is different ie. silencer size , through pipe size etc.

There's a video on this forum of my car at Goodwood so turn up the volume and enjoy the sound  Failing that , if you've got an iphone I could send something while it's ticking over

I've been trying to find those videos without luck (so many of the links don't seem to work any more)
One thing I didnt get so far is what type of manifold people are using?
I dont think I'll be on 260+ but I could easily aspire to 200
I imagine the longer the box, the quieter to sound? (my current one is only about 20" long)
Not got an iphone but I can play pretty much anything!

Don't know how to upload videos onto here so send me a PM off the forum with your email address and I'll send you my copy. You can see a version not edited on the main clubstylus page by clicking competition then Rob Farley but it's not so clear as Matt's edited version. I play it regularly to get my dose while waiting for the next track event :P full volume naturally

Found this..... during my rebuild inspection, so something to look out for.
The door itself & the door aperture/opening is fine.
Most likely because I cut too much away in the first place

Hmm, looks a bit nasty. I notice your silencer has square ends rather than domed, so I suppose you had to cut more away (and maybe it was even hitting the body sometimes).
What length is the box? Does it go all the way to the front arch as well?
Diameter is also important - looks like you have 6" dia?
