Hi all

Has anyone got any words of wisdom, with the benefit of hindsight, on the positioning of traditional round analogue gauges? There seem to be 3 schools of thought:

1: Speedo & tacho above the gearbox
2: Speedo & tacho centred above steering column
3: One or two ancilliary gauges above steering column and speedo & tacho either side of this but still viewed through the wheel.

I suspect this might be one of those err in haste, repent at leisure decisions....?

Well the less you have to glance away from the straight ahead windscreen view the better I would have thought so I'd say speedo/tacho ahead through the steering wheel then water temp/oil press next closest.

I think they look best straight ahead too, but its down to personal choice.
A lot depends on the size, & whether you want to scare your passengers.
I went for 80mm main gauges, 100mm look a bit overkill to me.

You could always go modern & fit an all in one unit or a fancy SPA Rev counter that has a digital speedo built in.
Tim's demo car has the Digidash unit... nice, simple & one hole to cut. Good price too.

The thing that I learnt, was buy some decent panel lights & switches straight off. Then choose carefully where you want to put them.
I had two goes, & went thru two dash panels before I was happy.

Another option, is to fit a dash from another car.
Brian Beavis fitted bits from an MX5 dash & instrument pod in his car. Some very nicely rolled ali sheet !
