So as ever im asking for some help from the people in the know, if i dont get on with competing this year. i never will.
thanks from craig.
i want to do hillclimbs and sprinting, Mainly speed events but i dont really know whats out there apart from that.

All you need for sprint and hill climb is a Non Race National B which you simply apply and pay for without any test . If you then want to get a National A Speed which I did , you will be observed by the stewards/ clerk of course when you actually compete then ask for a signature before going home. You leave your licence with the signing on guys before competing. If you've done nothing dangerous or stupid then they'll sign --- that doesn't mean you have to cruise around at shopping speed . Once you've collected 8 signatures or maybe less these days you can then apply for your Speed National A . If you fancy circuit racing then there'll be a fee plus exam plus driving test . That's not too difficult either  but a lot more expensive especially if you're anciant and need the medical

Forgot your other concerns :? Provided you enter a road going class then the rules are quite easy and cheap to conform to. When the scrute's open your bonnet and peer in accusingly  they like to see nice tidy wiring , clean engine bay , covered battery terminals( the neg with yellow tape on it) and no holes in the baulkhead. Outside they'll check your Tyres to be elligible for the class plus plenty of tread . You are allowed list 1B Tyres on road going(R888 Toyo or A048R Yoko etc) . Steering rack no slack and most will sit in the car to check the brake pedal is firm . A roll over bar is sensible but not required for road going strangely. A battery cut off switch that you can reach from the driving seat(it should cut the alternated too-- there are cheaper ones that don't). Then it's three inch harnesses BUT laps are accepted in road going , not for me though :o . A snell 2005 fireproof helmet as a minimum standard , fire proof gloves and fireproof overall . I'd buy the best you can afford regarding helmet/overalls. Race boots . Boots used to be optional but stupid really because race boots are so much easier to place your feet right in the heat of ' a moment ' . On top of this of course will be mot tax insurance along with number plate attached ---- ie , exactly as required for legal road access , all lighting , horn , indicators , brake lights etc in order . However , if you fancy entering modified or sports libre , more rules will apply plus the expense --- ha ha :P Come on , let's be seeing another Stylus driver proving the chassis has what it takes . Look forward to hearing of any events you go for :D

Suits are pretty expensive but around £200 for a three layer should do it . Helmet has to be to Snell 2005 and that means one from Motorsport-events. com , hedtec I think at £139 full face. Bike helmets don't do it. You can spend loads but this is about the minimum.
