Engine Mounts?

Post by kevp »

What Engine Mounts are you using?

I run the original Stylus units. They have approx 2" rubber (poly?) feet on them.
Is anyone using solid mounts on the engine & gearbox?

Only asking as Iv just had a roll cage fitted. And the guy said the front chassis was designed using the engine as a stressed member. :?: I think the mounts are quite stiff anyway but wondered if a solid fit would aid or hinder?

I still use rubbered mounts but if you've got poly's that's way stiffer than mine --- where did you get them , by the way :?: and do they screw straight onto the original mounts :?:

I've never considered solid mounting the engine and box , especially in sprint/hillclimb with us doing such savage standing starts , not sure everything would stand up to that sort of vibration Kevin
SBD and other even more highly tuned cars run them solid but then their engines get stripped as a matter of course , just for inspection pretty often :|
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

I run solid mounts, and an extra chassie member between the mounts, don't get a vibration problem, but then I don't run an exhaust, the manifold exits behind the front wheel. and all the hoses for rad, intercooler, and oil cooler are silocan, and stainless and very long.

Rob, mine are the standard SSC mounts. I don't think they are rubber as they are fairly hard & are about 2" cotton real bobbin type affairs. Presumably if they where rubber they would be really squidgy. That's why I think Poly.

Unsure if a solid link would make a difference &if so to what disadvantage.

Kelvin, I guess the silicon pipes stop any possible vibrations transmitting from the engine to radiators, also you do drive on the equivalent of a tarmac bowling green.

KevP --- the original SSC mounts were most definitely rubber BUT VERY hard and can't be bought now . The new ones available now are much softer , as I had to buy some 4 years back and found them softer --- I could push my finger and move it a little but not the old ones. My old mounts parted company with their steel discs top/bottom.
Regarding the solid mounting , I was more concerned about vibration directly wearing hyd clutch & gearbox components not radiators etc --- if the engine becomes directly part and parcel with the chassis this can be a problem . Not if you are the type that can afford to strip/inspect repair etc every season BUT I expect my engine to stay where it is year after year WHICH in the main , it has done
Like I said before , SBD used to pull their competition engine apart more than once in the season so any signs of wear can be dealt with before causing a bigger problem ---- their budget was large though .

Having said all that --- I would love to buy poly equivelant mounts ie. Cortina/Granada 41mm thick which is what SSC used.

I bought two sets of these, 1st set in original SSC thickness, then the Xtra thick to raise the engine up slightly.
Seem to me to be pretty hard, can't push my fingers into them

They are a Land Rover V8 engine mount - you can probably pick up on eBay for a competitive price. I have a pair waiting to be used on my car.

Looking at the photo they appear to be less than 41mm's and have a 3rd disc of metal in the middle OR is that just a rubber ridge :?:
Thinner would be good if available .

Have looked at the rover V8 mounts & they seem to be what Rob is describing. 37mm thick.
However mine look like Escort Mk2 mounts. These come in solid & firm, but look thicker.
I will measure mine.
