Zetec coil pack

Post by josephmoore »

Pretty sure the misfire is a result of the coil pack giving up. The one fitted to my car is part number 928F-12024-BE which appears to be specifically for the Escort XR3i which figures as I have a 1992 1.8L engine.

That particular part number is quite obscure but from what I've read any coil pack for an early Zetec (with the clip on type leads) will do. Is that correct? Is there anything (aside from needing to change the leads) stopping me from using a later type coil pack with the push on terminals?

Last question, anyone had any experience of the cheapo pattern parts? The options are around £25 for a pattern part but I'm always sceptical about the quality. The expensive option is the Accel 140018 at almost £60 delivered. Ouch. Genuine ones don't seem to be available, at least not without remortgaging everything I own.

Specifically, the part number 88SF-12029-A2A is cheap and plentiful. Fits the Mondeo, Escort, Ka and Fiesta with the only difference appearing cosmetic in that the connections are all at the same height whereas the ones on the XR3i version have the two nearest the bulkhead raised for clearance over the other leads.

So many questions

Having built my Zetec from crank up before buying a new block/head some years ago , you'd think I should know BUT I simply bolted the original along with new race leads straight onto the new head. Original being a 1992 2lt automatic from a MONDEO then my new , as now , engine is a 1998 block/head complete direct from FORD with no engine number stamped at all.

Not very helpful I know
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

Actually, pretty helpful as it confirms that it doesn't overly matter. All the Ford coil packs appear to have the same footprint for screwing them down and the same connector from the loom. I guess I'll buy a cheapo one and see how long it lasts.

The original silvertop coil packs are rumoured to be the better (life wise). I have used both on my car. I have found that its worth changing plugs, leads & coil packs every season.

The early & late types will fit either engines, but you do need the right leads to coil pack.

I'm still running the Silvertop coilpack that I built the original engine with in 1997 but with race leads.
