Alloy wheel nuts

Post by stylussprinter »

Seeing as I'd ordered new lightweight wheels from Carl Austin / MORLEY , YORKS , I was planning on using lightweight alloy race wheel nuts to secure them . They are tested to 279 lbft and hardened but have just twigged that the MSA banned them some time ago :o Strange then that they get advertised all over the place as competition wheel nuts
Steel dome closed nuts x 4 , like I have right now are best part of 1/2 lb yet a set of these alloy beasties weigh just 40grams --- doesn't seem much weight to worry about but when you consider that rotary weight is around equal to 10 times normal plus it's unsprung  and of course has a disproportional effect at the front compared to actual weight saved , due to the steering.
Ah well --------------- best laid plans etc
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

Matt Farah did a video on single-piece carbon wheels a few months back. Anecdotal testing, but quite interesting and the weight savings are pretty substantial. I wonder how long before we regularly start seeing composite wheels on production cars rather than just aftermarket. Would have though the tyres were a real issue though, as they're not only fairly weighty but also furthest from the centre of rotation.

My 13 in wheels are being shipped out today for just £20 via carrier , amazing delivery price :o Also had a little good fortune or bad luck depending on your view -------------- whilst engraving the wheels, he apparently just snicked a tiny 3 x 6 mm's area of anodise off the gold centre of one wheel , so asked whether I'd prefer a new from scratch gold billet OR £100 off my total invoice ------------ a no brainer for me :P The set of four wheels including delivery now comes to £172 each :D for three piece billet centres made to my spec :!:
A little gold paint will sort that , then tomorrow I'm picking up my AVON ZZR tyres from Silverstone circuit because BMTR happen to be servicing the race teams for this weekend's HSCC racing.
Just need to do some bolt thread cutting off from the ' steering arm to rack end ' pins , plus fit smaller spacers and ' K ' nuts ----- then the pins will just clear the inner wheel rim by 4mm's :) The weights will need to be away from them too

Looking for lighter 15's originally then having discovered Carl's business , got carried away with the rotary weight (which is times 10 actual weight) that could potentially be saved using 13's . I'll lose some top end at max rev's but feel the overall result will justify the change . If that turns out to produce a slower lap time , I can always change the diff --- I've done the sums
He's a very nice guy who's attention to detail on his own winning twin engined Mini is awesome ----- alloy this , titanium that plus an even thinner wheel centre than mine and loads of really small components throughout the car made of titanium . Basically he can make any part for any car in exotic material at a price .
It would have been nice to run slicks , which in my class I can but without two sets of wheels it would be pretty dodgy only having slicks with our UK weather . (plus cost twice what I've just invested ---- the 15's are sold to help pay for the 13's)

Apparently shipped so either Saturday or Monday --- too late for BMTR at Silverstone to fit the 215x55 tyres I just collected , to save post .
Any time you wanna collect the ML & R888 SG's --- just text me ok :)

On my way home I dropped in to see Jo White , race engineer who's also building his own hillclimb car from chassis design up :P Met him at Eelmoor when he was helping the guy driving the GLOBAL to sort his car out after the chain broke

Yep been looking at a set for christmas
Force Racing Wheels facebook page is good too its got this brake upgrade.

Only trouble is the CXR's that im running would have to go as they wouldn't fit over this package.
The max i can do is 273mm or 10.75" so thats what im getting :D

Rob you might like this fully adjustable anti roll bar if your going for trick parts its off of a Dellara IR12.

I need to move the engine back an inch or so to get it fitted.

RE you friend building his own chassis this might be useful default values] click me

I still run solid 249 front discs on the Stylus track car without issue , provided you use race pads and never had a problem stopping the car , in fact I don't barely need to stroke them . Chassis building wise , Jo White has a racing history in many types of cars , particularly hillclimb single seaters , bec powered . He can make anything you can think of , even a steering rack to spec plus has a very successful competition history as a driver. I visited him mainly to see what machinery and capability he had ---- soon found out , as he's just built rear uprights for an historic race car for a ' big name ' . Nothing pretentious , just good engineering.
Also someone's ADR there for developement , in fact the whole series of units around him are race car orientated .
Not sure I'd want that adjustable ARB , it looks heavy and mine's ok --- I'd only need to put a spring steel adjuster on one end to be ultimately variable --- BUT the cost would put most off bothering.

The pair of front wheels(different offset)arrived Saturday , so today I trial fitted one wheel to check the actual clearance as opposed to my calculated clearance. The tiny 1 thread extending beyond the 3/8ths nut holding the steering arm pin onto the rack end , cleared the inner wheel by 1/2mm . So dumping the 6mm cone washer & nyloc then putting in it's place a rodend spacer/cut off to 3mm plus 1mm washer with ' K ' nut ---- gave me 6 threads spare , so cut off 4mm's . It's now got 4mm's clearance from the inner wheel rim and positioned approx'ly 25mm's in from the edge , so any balancing weights will have to be 30mm's back from the edge ---job done :)

The rear wheels are no problem being drum brakes and no steering or suspension intrusions --- they'll probably arrive on Monday , so then it's off to get them all fitted with the ZZR 215 X 55 tyres in my boot  (no offset on the rears)

Filled the tiny scratch damage on one wheel , using Carbon Fibre resin glue then some gold paint when dry.

A 'front' Force Racing 3.5kgs 13 X 7.5 in wheel with very small defect next to a bolt if viewed carefully

22nd Oct --- today , filled the fault/damage with a little carbon fibre resin glue to seal it from the wet then touched it up with gold Hammerite. The rear wheels arrived today , so it's off to Adams & Page with the 4 tyres to get them fitted and balanced :)

It says HONDA but the MSA has banned the use of alloy wheel nuts --- they say that as everything heats up the internal threaded diameter expands enough to make them unsafe ----------------- Also it's dollars so the UK holds them on arrival for another 20% before delivery so they're not cheap. I am wondering though whether ' scrutes ' bother to inspect wheel nuts
