uprated type 9 gearbox but from where
uprated type 9 gearbox but from where
At the moment the car is running what i believe to be a std type 9 behind a 2.0 zetec, as i plan to up the power, i know this will be a weak link, the question is what will be the best box from which company, i plan to use the car on road with track days and S.T.D sprinting. As i believe in buy once cry once, what do you guys recommend? I expect the final engine build/power will be around 160bhp@ the wheels.

BGH or TranX for starters, Quaife proper (they now own TranX too) if you can afford it !
Mainly you just need a long first to make getting away a bit better.

Re: uprated type 9 gearbox but from where
I have an ex - Caterham T9 CR race box , uprated by BGH strength wise --- ratios 2.04 , 1.54 , 1.21 , 1 and 5th overdrive , using a 4.4 diff ATB (231bhp). On 13 inch wheels with 55 profile tyres , top speed is 130mph BUT it gets there pretty damn quick. Originally I fitted a 3.89 diff with 165bhp which was quick and great for road but no good for competition.
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

Re: uprated type 9 gearbox but from where
BHP isn't the real killer of the type 9 it's torque. I know of several NA engines running standard type 9 boxes with 200+ bhp. There is one turbo Zetec I know running a bog standard eBay type 9 and his box is fine after several track days but he managed to fubar his drive shafts on a santa pod RWYB day..... (sierra diff not english live axle)
But if you're looking for an uprated one BGH are a good bet but be prepared for some serious ££££s
You could always run it till/if it goes pop then upgrade?

The Mazda RX8 6 speed gearbox is becoming popular. Dont know about ratios but you can get an adapter from ebay to fit fords. length is about the same - dont know about bell housing.

Re: uprated type 9 gearbox but from where
For up rated type9 I used BGH but I have heard that SPC http://www.spcomponents.co.uk/ do better ratios.
I suppose it comes down to what you what to do with the car, how much you want to spend and how much youre going to upgrade the engine over time.
Im not smart enough to know how to work out what ratios are better, but im sure that theres a ratio calculator out there that you can use.
After the gearbox the rear axle or halfshafts will be the next to go pop.
link to RX8 adaptor i think the boxes might be a wee bit heavier.

Hmm... interesting...kevp wrote:The Mazda RX8 6 speed gearbox is becoming popular. Dont know about ratios but you can get an adapter from ebay to fit fords. length is about the same - dont know about bell housing.
The adapter plate that Dave has linked to uses the RX8 bellhousing.
I was already thinking the RX8 rear diff assy may be cheaper/higher torque rated than the MX5 MK1/2 unit I'm re-engineering the Stylus rear end for.
Doubly interesting in that you can buy a complete RX8 with a blown rotary engine for £400 on the auction site.
1st 3.760, 2nd 2.269, 3rd 1.645, 4th 1.187, 5th 1.000, 6th 0.843, Reverse 3.564
Final drive 4.444
Not sure how it compares to the Miata/MX5 6 speed ??
Time to start browsing the Mazda forums for some torque rating data.....
Sierra Ratios - STD & Aftermarket...
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
Sierra 2.0 3.65 1.97 1.37 1 0.82
Capri 2.8 3.36 1.81 1.26 1 0.82
____
BGH 2.75 1.75 1.26 1 0.82
BGH 2.66 0.84
0.86
0.89
____
SPC 2.482 1.61 1.225 1.1 0.87
____
Quaife 2.39 1.54 1.21 1.1 0.87
Quaife 2.2
Quaife 2.04
So effectively, the RX8 box (for our purposes) has a useless 1st, but 2nd to 6th are effectively the same ratios as a long 1st Type9 1st-5th.

Re: uprated type 9 gearbox but from where
Could be an idea looking at RX8 rear diffs as i believe that mx5 ones are all shagged in the LSD department and no one refurbishes them.MattD wrote:Interesting suff on ratios
Any ideas on the weights of the gearbox ? i thought that there was an extra 15kg for the RX8 box. its enough to slow the cars down.
Im not looking to do the swap as I have good torque from the engine and have spent a small fortune on the g/box. But its always nice to see how things are changing/progressing.
Currently the box is an ally Quaife case with BGH E8 internals.
If i'd known that SPC and Quaife did different internals i might have been a bit more interested in getting the ideal ones for the car.
Still its quick enough for me.

Speak to Bara about refurbishing viscous differentials. I had one of their 600% uprated OEM ones on my 200SX and it transformed the car.

Thanks for all the replies, plenty to think about, i was expecting to drop a couple of k on the the box so plenty of options.

Re: uprated type 9 gearbox but from where
I'm (going to be) running the Mk3 MX5 diff in my car - same casing as the RX8, but the 4.44 ratio in that is crazy. MX5 comes in 3.7 and 4.1 flavours, I have the former in ATB LSD format.
I've got a BGH box that I was having bad thoughts about selling... also got a V6 box that I do need shot of, needs a rebuild, but would be a good donor for a hybrid box build as the V6 ratios aren't too bad if you stick a long first on it (basically what BGH do anyway).
