Limiting Steering Rack
Limiting Steering Rack
Has anyone attempted to limit their steering rack? My wheels touch the head lamp bowls when getting near to full lock. For IVA they will fail me on this i expect, plus i don't want to forget, like i did the other day and then start rubbing the light bowls etc.
So if you have limited the rack or steering, how have you done it please?
thanks
Matt

Re: Limiting Steering Rack
Presuming that you are using an escort rack, then lock stops should do the trick.

Re: Limiting Steering Rack
It really depends on what height you've set the chassis off the tarmac . When mine wasn't extra low as now , I simply cut the back off the fibreglass light housing , moved the wires a little and bent the spade connectors 90 degrees . Then Sikaflexed a circular ally cover over the hole ---- job done . My rack was ESCORT MK2 Quickrack .
The amount cut off left an approximately 3.5 inch hole.

Re: Limiting Steering Rack
ok Rob, better set the height before I decide how much to limit the rack.
What would you suggest on the front and on the rear? The front is quite low at the moment anyway and needs to come up.
We did cut the light bowls down to give more room, but may not be enough!
Thanks

Re: Limiting Steering Rack
It's a very long time ago since mine was first put on the road but initially it was 160mm's under the lower front 50x25 tube. Then I dropped it to 140mm's with headlights still in situ but f 'glass bowls cut back again as tight to the inner electrics as possible , this time using butyl rubber/pond liner , to avoid issues with tyres ' just ' touching . Once you decide to compete you'll find that height too high , then of course shorter stiffer springs are needed and shocks to suit ie. with weight on but still showing an inch of piston travel , double that at the rear as a minimum.Pete&Matt wrote:ok Rob, better set the height before I decide how much to limit the rack.

What size wheels/tyres ? When mine was SVA'd it had 14x6x185 so easier to sort the issue .

Re: Limiting Steering Rack
I made a two pairs of half moon clamps with caphead screws for mine.
One side smaller centre diameter than the other, and drivers side clamp must be very thin as there's not much exposed rack to work with.
Will try & find the old CAD file on my PC at home.
I did buy some parts from RS Components too, but seem to remeber that didnt work out, which is why the wun-offs got made.
Useful info here, seem to cover it all...

If you're having trouble finding the stops, just use a jubilee clip on each side
