Re: MSA compliant rollbar
Matt, I'd love for the work to go your way so that other owners can benefit, can you make me a bar?
Re: MSA compliant rollbar
Just to add a spanner in the works here guys, I've just left wiscombe hill climb , there were 2 7 type cars running just a rear hoop and a petty bar!!!!! No stays at all.
When I spoke to the driver they had it made this year by a pro outfit ( nice tig welding but at £1800.00 it should be) .

Cage is made!
I used Rob at Cyclone Racing near Radstock (Bath); design was pre-approved by MSA o be compliant with K1, we tweaked the details so that it will act as a frame for a new hood and door glass (perspex).

Re: MSA compliant rollbar
Weight is irrelevant for me; having seen the end result of a car that drifted onto the infield of Llandow and rolled multiple times I wouldn’t consider going on track without a full cage, the windscreen on a Stylus won’t take any weight and very quickly your helmet becomes a plough. My guess is twice the weight of a rear hoop that meets regs.stylussprinter wrote:What does it weigh though and what cost ?

Re: MSA compliant rollbar
Yesterday , I was marshalling at Castle Combe and had a look around the paddock at various car's cages and rear 30 degree stays . A Pheonix had a main hoop with no rear stays , which I know are not compulsory where no rear chassis is available to mount them. The rops regs then allow forward stays at 30 degrees . However , this car had forward stays , questionably at 30 degrees but my main doubt around it's MSA legality , was they were not mounted on the top horizontal hoop as per BLUE BOOK drawing , instead were mounted on the upright sides of that hoop and down past the hoop curved end . It passed scrutineering without issues ---- very confusing

Re: MSA compliant rollbar
I learn't via a reply from Michael Duncan , at the MSA regs tech dept , that even if your chassis extends beyond the roll hoop rearwards , you can still use forward facing struts onto an appropriate chassis point . HOWEVER ----- it clarifies that MSA reg by saying '' only if it isn't possible to make a 30 degree angle with the main roll hoop , without going beyond the suspension pickup points ''
So , I need to remove the rear wheel then do a little measuring between the pickup point and roll hoop base . If rear stays won't make a 30 degree angle when welded exactly on that point or before then the MSA won't agree the ROPS as compliant . If that can't be achieved then forward facing stays are the answer -- provided those stays don't clobber my helmet , where they slant in towards the first straight tube available past the curved end of the hoop

Re: MSA compliant rollbar
If you mean the rear chassis rail where the trailing arms locate then yes you can easily make 30 degrees, as I have said before it means that you need to put 2 slots in the boot lid, cut out the rear boot floor, fabricate and weld on the rear stays mounting points to the chassis cross member etc. It can be done it just means the boot will leak, unless you make some gaiters ( cut down rubber gearshift ones might do the job) but then you can't remove the boot lid, swings and roundabouts as they say.

Re: MSA compliant rollbar
I've already checked that out and don't think you're right , the suspension will be judged by the spring/shock pivot point . In my case the tubes won't go through the boot in such a way as to prevent removing the lid but we'll see. The main point is that there's an alternative .Shooter63 wrote:If you mean the rear chassis rail where the trailing arms locate then yes you can easily make 30 degrees, as I have said before it means that you need to put 2 slots in the boot lid, cut out the rear boot floor, fabricate and weld on the rear stays mounting points to the chassis cross member etc. It can be done it just means the boot will leak, unless you make some gaiters ( cut down rubber gearshift ones might do the job) but then you can't remove the boot lid, swings and roundabouts as they say.
