FORD XFLOW
FORD XFLOW
I am having my brothers car finished by Tim .We have run into trouble potentially with SVA before we have even turned up!
I believe the rebuilt engine I have to have been from a 1974 capri, and as such it wouldnt need to run a Cat etc but the problem is that x flows were manufactured beyond the 1997 date which makes it need one.
the problem is that ford didnt put engine numbers on x flows and as such it is looking as if i might have put 1300 quid or so up the swanee as it is impractical to run cat and engine management with such an old unit
has anyone any ideasplease ? I do believe one member was thinking of getting rid of x flow unit if that was in a pre 1997 car and can be proven that would be a really great help
thanks

Building for older brother .
date code
I am no expert on Ford.
I would look for some kind of date code or batch mumber on the block which may indicate when it was cast this would be a starting point

Ford Crossflow
I know of no Ford product which used the crossflow after Escort II ceased in 1983. If it is a Capri 1.6 block from 1974 it will have 711M 6015 BA cast on the nearside of the block below the exhaust manifold. MkII Capri 1.3 were crossflow but the 1.6s were Pinto. It is said that the KA uses the crossflow engine but not in 1.6 and these are very different to the 1970's units.
Hope this helps,
Steve.

wikipedia
I'm with Steve, the later crossflow "based" engines are quite different, like being called endura e
check it out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Kent_engine#Endura-E
And you can always send the castings found on your block to ford to ask from when till when these were made. You don't need an exact date for SVa unless it's manufactured in '95

I think I have the solution to your problem.
Look in the burton catalog if you have it, otherwise get it, it's free. In the front several engines are explained and it tells you that crossflow based engines built after 1988 are distributorless. Says so in the part of the HCS and endura e.
only kent, crossflow and valencia use a distributor and the final manufacture date for all those is 1988.
But I would still get the letter from ford just to be sure.

i do thank everyone for the kind help and advice i have been given
my dilatory brother found a number and if correct it proves it to be a 1970 engine .we did know it came from a 1974 capri so i guess it was a replacement at some time
i have written to ford technical with the details and await reply .
once again thanks .malcolm,
