stylus hood support

Hi, I have just fitted a taller and wider roll bar on my stylus. The mounting points are the same as for the original bar, but the bar curves out towards the sides of the car to give more width.

I am having a custom hood made, as the original now doesn't fit. The new one will rest on the new roll bar, but will need one hoop to keep the hood pressed against the inside of the side screens. I sold the original brackets and hoops with the original hood. Can anyone suggest any fittings please that could allow the hoop height to be adjusted at either side to tension the hood a little? The hoop will need to fold or detatch into two pieces for storage in the boot, and I wondered about an adjuster in the centre to alter the width too. Any idea of the best material and optimum external and internal tube dia please?

It would be great to be able to unroll the hood (already clipped on at the back) and fix the front support quickly to the top of the screen, without too much tension, and then tension from inside the car.

I bet there is a very simple answer....any suggestions much appreciated.

Hi. Cant help on your hood problem. But Im intrested in the roll bar - I also need a wider & higher one, mainly for MSA. Did you get it made or is it an off the shelf upgrade ?
Pete was supposed to get me a higher one (it may well be) but it does not meet MSA or it did at the time & Im just a slow builder (7 years).

Hi Paul

you might be able to use a turnbuckle to tension the hood, see http://www.air-techinc.com/cat_checklis ... p=hardware

Its just a tube with a left hand thread at one end and a right hand at the other, thread the hood rails the same and by turning the turnbuckle the rail will expand

Thanks Adrian, the turnbuckle looks just the job.

My roll bar was custom made. It uses the original mounting points of my 1998 car. It allows Caterham seats to slide right back, giving a more comfortable driving position, and the extra width and height give some protection to your head rather than the top of your neck. I copied the shape on to some mdf before fitting it, and can mail some pictures if it helps. I have no idea if it would meet any track regulations, but it seems much better than the original....and it's satin black powder coated by a very helpful guy at Vulcan Stove Enamelling at Rustington Sussex. I would add that it was a very expensive and time-consuming excercise to get it all just right (the planning, tacking and finally welding), and despite using several extra supports while tack welding it, it all still moved when finally welded.

Still, it all fits now

My stylus has a roll bar fitted (I think by Neville Powell but I'm not sure). I'm not sure if it still has the original hood, but I've taken some photos to show what it looks like. I'm 6'4" and don't have any problem with my head rubbing against the roof, although getting in and out with it on is another matter!

Thanks Dave, the stainless mesh for the exhaust cut-outs was specially formed to the curve of the sills. It was then held in place with peeling rivets. An edging strip is planned to finish it all off, and will be added when the stainless silencers need a polish.
