The above is the quoted bottom ball joint on the Stylus - is this the one for the escort upright (and the sierra with an added conical shim) or is it one that fits the Sierra upright only?
I have measured the Sierra upright for the taper of the lower ball joint, details as follows:
Top (smallest diameter) = 14.5mm
Bottom (largest diameter) = 16.5mm
Depth of taper = 16mm (this is the length over which it must taper).
Once I get the above question confirmed I will look to see if I can find a part specifically for the Sierra upright, then when anyone comes to change, or wants to change, they will have an option - no guarantee there is a perfect fit out there.

Re: Bottom swivel
That number refers to the ROVER SHERPA track rod end and suits the Escort. I have no knowledge of the SIERRA dimensions . They weren't used for many cars as the geometry's not as good. If you fancy a final but expensive solution then a nice alloy upright's the way to go with rodends I can get a pair made in billet with excellent geometryacrobin wrote:Bottom swivel

Rod, thanks, Ady said they tried to keep the same ball joint as used on the Escort upright and just use a conical shim.
I will use my dimensions I took and the Sherpa van part details to see if I can source a better fit part.
Yes I would love to go for a pair of ally escort uprights, but...not for this car. I was going to race it, but now am going the BEC route with a R1ot; the R1ot will get the fancy parts, the stylus will be a every day fun road car.
I will upgrade the Stylus as the spring rates are as of what Pete sold (180s fr, 160s rr), also I will make some rear radius arms to accomidate longer suspension travel - just not from day one.

Yes Escort or equivalent would be the thing to do, but I bought the car as a rolling chassis and that is a package of uprights, brakes, pads and discs - I would have to expend too much to change when I have had no use out of what I have currently bought.
I will over time look to replace the Sierra uprights, but not in one go.
Number 1, get the car on the road and in use.
....then upgrade - Steering wheel first (want a quick release wheel), springs possibly combined with the rear radius arms then look to upgrade brakes and front uprights.
I will have to set a priority order and that may get upset by essentials I find I need when driving it.
I should have insisted on Escort uprights when I ordered the car, I did not know just how much of a compromise Sierra ones were.
"Are the rocker arms for the Sierra and Escort upright different? " - still need this answered though.

Uprights Sierra/Escort
The Stylus RT rockers are longer from axis to upright for the Sierra uprights to account for the extra width of an RT. However if it's a classic , they'll be the same length as for Escort uprights.
You could always flog your sierra package to a FURY builder or another SYLVA marque then buy a pair of Escorts ready cut / shut from Matt D. on this forum. How do I know he's got some ----------------- cos he bought mine to put on his car

I just got a price to get a pair of one-offs made to the correct spec. (better in that the spindle could be longer to stop the rubber being squashed) - £60 (Amsteer).
May be cheaper if I can get a number made.
I will do some more digging to see if there are any "Off the self" options.
Yes, the Escort uprights are tempting.
I will keep you posted.

Escort uprights
As Rob says I've got a spare pair of Escort uprights in the garage.
I modded Robs old one, & they are now on my car.
I was keeping the old originals as spares, but could be tempted to part with them.
Send me a pm if interested.
