Goodwood trackday 25th feb

Post by kevp »

Im booked on the 25th (feb) at Goodwood.

Got the car in bits at the moment though. Cant wait to get out in the Stylus. Its a thursday. Open pitlane & no extra for passenger's or extra drivers. Limited to 25 cars, so Im hoping for a lot of track time.

Also as an update I have this years speed dates. they dont start until April at Gurston though. Due to work (money, cutbacks & gloomy outlook) I probably wont get any racing in. I havent got the car to spec anyway yet.

See you all soon. Kevin

Is that with Goodwood itself or a trackday company Kev :?: How much ? Can't be a test day , they're always on Tuesdays

Rob. Its a club from the Isle of White. White Sevens, I think. they always hire the circuit at the start of the year. They didnt fill all the places so opened it up. I was 1st reserve, but now in. Noise level is 98db though.

Yes , I've been searching the forums and found it was a 98 db day  amazing price though . Goodwood have changed their tune somewhat since I was quoted to hire the track exclusively for clubstylus just a few months after our Llandow day . That worked out at well over £200 a car assuming 40 cars which we didn't get . The forum I read was talking £175  for 25 cars :?:

Depending on what's going on after our ' break away ' to the wild west country , maybe I'll drive down to spectate and natter

Very disappointing day.

The morning was dry (as in not raining) but the track was very wet. However I didnt pass the noise test. I had 105db and the target was 98 or 96db - cant remember now. So I ran around to one of the units on the entrance to the circuit who gave me a "sound trap" to fit on the end. He seems to do a good trade on these. He has a tub of different silencing methods that you just pick & fix to the end of the exhaust & return at the end of the day for a small fee to charity.

However when I was ready to re sound test, there had been some track incidents. So the marshals inc the sound men had to rebuild the tyre walls. The incident was as serious as it could be without actually hurting anyone & the car ready crushed & boxed to go apparently. Anyway this took some time as the tyre wall is bolted together!!

After that the sound men had to catch up with the drive through. With a few more red flag incidents happening regularly. This meant the sound men had to get out to sort the problem.

At 1.00 o clock I had my sound test, which I just got through. But it was now raining. Not just rain but double black cloud heavy rain. And it didnt stop.

I went out though. Did 3 laps. Couldnt keep the car stable even whilst taking it easy. Going down the straights I was jigging everywhere. It was so bad I thought a wheel was coming off. Had as much rain on the inside of the screen as the outside. The exhaust mod didnt allow the engine to rev above 4k. Probably a good thing as it happened. After checking the car over I went out again. The track was even worse now. Did 2 laps & quit.

Liz stayed in the van all day. Learnt nothing of the circuit, nothing of the cars handling, nothing about driving in the rain.

Ohh , that sounds horrible and uncomfortable too especially having water on the inner windscreen :( Sounds like my Aug 1st sprint when everybody and his dog were flying off the circuit but at least the rain hit the front of my windscreen . Water just ran across the track though so can imagine you didn't get much fun yesterday

What silencer length x diameter do you have Kevin and packing :?: If it's repackable try basalt -- it will drop the db's 3 to 4 db's if packed right. Mine has had it for 3 years now without repacking whereas I previously repacked every other event using E glass

At Goodwood it normally measures 98 to 102 depending on the weather which at 231bhp is brilliant . I've told loads of people about the stuff . I heard it via an ex-hillclimb champion from TECHCRAFT . It was £35 a bag 3 yrs ago and it took half the bag to repack my 22 inch x 6 inch silencer with a 2.75 inch through pipe .

Not dead certain the name's spot on , check it out on google

Iv never had a problem with the db level before. I have got a re packable silencer so I will try your suggestion. I cant believe their measurement as my motor bikes are far, far, louder & they have always passed. I think the car probably just needs some running, as it was starting to pop @ the 4k mark.

I understand it may be dry on saturday so Ill go for a run out if I can. Probably need new plugs.

Mine was loose otherwise different silencer diameters can't be catered for plus packing is an art --- don't shuv it in tight . It needs doing a little at a time using a 13mm wood dowling rod to gently (with fingers not clenched hand) push it in equally around the silencer until you reach the top . Too loose = too loud also too tight = too loud

Just looking into Basalt for when I'm ready to repack.

I can only find this:
http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p1501 ... rrency=GBP

It looks like it's mat, but says it's a 1kg bag. Anyone know which it is?

Is 1kg enough for a 6" x 24"ish silencer?

Rob: Did you use stainless wire on the perforated tube or just pure basalt in the can? As the cost of the wire on Merlin is astronomical!

Firstly , somewhere on this forum I've said many times that Basalt via :!: TECH CRAFT :!: , racing exhaust manufacturers , is the place to get it. Don't bother with stainless if it's that price now , use ordinary wire wool , it'll last out before your next packing anyway.

Secondly , buy two bags from them then you'll have enough to fill the silencer with some left for next time ---- so's you'll only need the one bag

I bought two bags for 35 quid 3 yrs ago
