Brake calipers - Escort?

Got a seized caliper - to the point where there was smoke pouring out of it and the disc's now blue, so fairly sure that's one for the scrap pile. Given that the car seems to have been built with fairly standard components everywhere and a live axle, I'm guessing they're Escort calipers. They look identical to those fitted to the Puma which would make sense.

Photo attached if someone could sanity check that they don't look like Sierra ones for any reason? Will go in search of a part number on them this evening.

Previous owner said he'd had a problem with one of them sticking, so I expect I'll do the both of them to be sure. Would be ideal if they are identical to the Puma as there'll be a chance of picking up a younger pair than from an Escort.

Fronts are M16 if your uprights are cut off Macpherson struts. If rears ---- no idea ?

Yep, they're the fronts - got drums on the rear which makes me reckon Escort all round. Looked for some part number on them earlier but couldn't see one without taking the wheel off (no jack here at the moment that'll fit under - d'oh).

Some scrabbling around with a tape measure suggests the discs on the Stylus are the 240mm diameter, 22mm thickness, 58mm height vented discs as fitted to the MK4 Escort.

The Puma (just happen to have one handy to measure ) is similar but not identical. Late model Pumas use a slightly larger diameter (258mm) disc with a smaller overall height but the same thickness and what looks like the same design caliper, perhaps with a different mounting on the caliper or perhaps the difference is on the hub. Couldn't tell without taking the wheel off and it's dark out now, so that's a job for another day just for curiosity's sake...

have a look at rally design site and see how much some wilwood 4 pots are......you might be supprised how little they are!

Hmm, Wilwoods are £150 each which is reasonable but I can't justify it right now (money better spent on a roof!). What I have got hold of is a set of RS Turbo calipers, discs and pads for £30 which are the 260mm ones as used on the Puma but with the same overall disc height as the standard Escort 240mm brakes. Could be a winner. They're coming from a company so if they're knackered they're heading straight back to them; worth a punt.

However, what I have are definitely not M16 calipers (judging by pictures of them on the Internet) which appear to be a fixed two-piston caliper for solid discs, whereas I've got the later Escort/Orion sliding single-piston caliper for vented discs.

Ah , well that's what the seizing problem is then , dead easy to sort , just undo clean , grease and replace ! Don't like them though . Escort M2 are 249 not 240 . New/refurbed calipers M16's are £40 each .

I'd be more inclined to give the things a service if the previous owner hadn't said he'd had a sticky caliper already, so sounds like old calipers getting grumpy through lack of use over the past few years.

You're right, Mk2's had larger solid discs, but I've definitely got Mk3/4 vented ones at 240mm. The relatively cheap RS Turbo setup at 260mm will do just fine for now I reckon as it's just a road car after all.

Just to bring the thread to a close, the original caliper hadn't seized in the usual way where the sliders corrode and won't budge, but the dust seal around the piston itself had popped out in one place so I expect it had corroded inside the caliper.
