Back in the room
Back in the room
Good morning,
After far too long I'm rolling again. I picked the car up about a month ago right before having a load of busy weekend but finally this weekend got back on the road.
The engine has been fully rebuilt. It's a 13B Mazda rx7 turbo engine and I lost compression early last year. Took it to a rotary specialist who took their time but have done a solid job. There wasn't much that could be salvaged but I have a rebuilt engine with bigger injectors, a whole new ignition system including a much more modern ecu. It runs very well on its running in map but we'll turn up the wick and map it properly when it's run in. I did 130 miles yesterday with no major issues, 870 to go. Fuel consumption is improved although I've lost the popping, banging and flames... probably connected
In addition I've raised the car 20mm all round so the tyres don't rub any more. It's still relatively low though compared to some measurements I've read on here. I've also backed off front and rear arbs and the dampers to give me a bit more compliance on the road while I run it in and it's much more pleasant to drive.
The car used to run 3 degrees of camber but I've backed that off to 1.5 and currently I'm not running any toe in, well, perhaps a smidge. The only thing I think I need to change is the relative position of the wishbones to the top of the suspension. I have some of Rob's excellent wishbones and following advice I've positioned then as far forward as I can but this has resulted in very heavy steering on the move although extremely precise. I may move it back a mm to see if it makes it slightly easier without losing the stability or the turn in.
Few little niggles to sort out. The gearbox reverse gate seems to be stuck open as it sat around for a year, should be an easy fix. Diff feels a bit tight in car parks and did notice a drop of oil of the bottom of the axle casing so will investigate that.
I'm hoping that I'll get the rest of the running in done in time for some track days later this year but we'll see how we go.
Nice to be rolling again
Cheers,
Mark

Re: Back in the room
Good to see you back on here and car being used again . Three degrees camber is a hell of a lot and could only be needed if the suspension was very soft , allowing huge roll which would then need the 3 degrees to get a full flat tyre patch on the tarmac in cornering --- even then , purely on track. Mine's only heavy steering at parking speeds so wouldn't expect the steering to be heavy when rolling . The whole set-up will effect that not just one item --- toe , camber , castor , tyre pressure (!!!) plus rack ratio and steering wheel diameter --- less than 12 inch will be hell with a quick rack unless you're a weight lifter.
I just love the Stylus but she keeps swallowing £££ !

Re: Back in the room
I'll play with it until I get it right. There's so much adjustability in those wishbones and everything else that it was unlikely I'd get it exactly how I'd like it the first time it was assembled
Just glad to have it back

Re: Back in the room
Running in all done and engine remapped. I pick it up tomorrow morning just in time for the summer.
Oh.
Oh.
Re: Back in the room
Definitely worth the wait. Engine feels incredibly strong and more power than I've had in any car for the weight. What a car it is now.
Just got to service the brakes and book a track day.
Happy days.

Mark

Re: Back in the room
I'll do my best to be there. What time do things kick off? I may be able to come down for the morning just to say hello. Can you point me in the direction of some directions please?
It's in a few pieces today just finishing up. The brakes are a bit sketchy as it's been sat around while the engine was being built and found that the rear pads had started to fall apart and one had completely delaminated and it needed new fluid. It'll all get sorted by next weekend though, weather permitting.
Next year I'll be joining the club and doing some auto solos and some sprints. I just need to get the appropriate clothing over the winter. I won't be quick but it will be fun learning.
The engine has now been mapped to 0.9 bar and it's running roughly 400bhp. It feels an awful lot stronger than it did when I first got it but very controllable.
See you soon

Great, thanks. My email address is mark at cwork.co.uk.
What time will you be planning on getting there? I can come along for the morning/lunch but am taking my daughter to her first gig in the evening so can't stay all day.
Cheers,
Mark

Re: Back in the room
I'll be there on the dot at 7-00am as scrutineering is at 7-15am plus need a decent paddock spot You can't miss it , car's red and tow car too We normally get 3 runs before lunch as long as the weather's ok and no one flies off into the trees (like I did in 2007 )dern wrote:Great, thanks. Re: Back in the room
Really nice to see you all on Sunday. I've filled in the form to join the FDMC and will send it off this week and look for some kit over the winter.
The car ran faultlessly on the way home and I admit I did practice the odd quick start on the way home. Can't wait to see if I'm as good as the car is now.
All the best,
Mark
