Rear body work

Hi All, OK I admit it I need help (wife has been telling me I need therapy for years!)
I am going to fit the light clusters from the BMW Z4 to the back of the stylus. I think they look great, unfortunately they are far from flat and there is no way to fit them without the need to 're-design' the back end of the car. I have had to chop large holes to make the lights fit but I need to "build up" the bits arround the bottom of the lights by about 15mm to stop them looking like they are just hanging out the hole.
I have trawled through the internet for the last couple of weeks I am unable to find any information as to the easiest way to do this. I have thought of using some marine ply as packing then use GRP over the top to match with the bodywork, or i was thinking of riveting some mesh straight to the existing bodywork and then using the standard "pug" to build it up. Either way it looks like i have a large amound of sanding to do afterwards.
Does anyone have any ideas? If i use Body filler will it be OK to build it up that much?
I have attached a couple of pics so hopefully you can see what I mean. The wood that is stuck to the car at the moment is only to hold the lights in place whilst I make the support brackets on the back, but it did give me the idea about using marine ply etc.

Any ideas would be a great help.

I wouldn't build it up . Personally I'd rather sink them in by making your own mould to drop them in , say 1 inch then cut the required shape from that . Just draw a nice tidy line around the cluster with a black felt pen . Construct your mould from very thin wire gauze then f/glass thin sheet/resin it . Finally using filler for a nice level finish.(keeping the extra weight to a minimum !) If in doubt , contact Andy Bailey from this forum who is blo ----dy spot on regarding moulding techniques. Hi Rob,
I did start going down that route to start with, unfortunately beacuse of the curves on the lights the outer edges ended up really recessed and did not look very good at all. It did not seam to matter which angle i tried to mount them it just did not look right. By bringing them forward and setting the inner edges flush with the rear body work, the other angles on the lights look OK and the visibility of the lights from angles is pretty good too, my option really is to build up the bottom edge of both lights and make it all blend in with the origional contours of the body.
Any thoughts?
