Shocks and Springs

What shocks and springs do you guys reccomend? We are going to be using the car mainly for road use, with some track use too. We both weigh around 11st.
The chassis has the new rear bent arms on it.

I know the main options are ProTech or GAZ. Any others?

Hopefully somthing will come up at Exeter!

I was supplied Protech shocks and 220 springs for the front and 180 springs for the rear with bent arms. Unsure of the lengths though. These were a reasonable price through SSC when they used to supply parts

If you weigh 11 st and want to track it too , I'd use 1.9 inch shocks / springs (alloy d.adjustable if you can afford them ) 11 inch open at the front with 7 inch 225 lbs springs plus antirollbar(without bar --- use 250 plus) Use 1/4 to 1/3 rd of your shock clicks up front.
At the rear use 15 inch 1.9 inch shocks with 1.9 / 10 inch 200 lbs springs . Use 1/2 to 2/3 rds of your shock clicks at the rear. Set the ride height so you can live with it on the road probably around 120 to 130mm under front lower chassis rail . Then set rear ride height (just under seat pan where steel joins the alloy footwell) at 20 mm higher than the front.
This is a base setting to start you off (for road AND track ) With this set up you'll need around 1.5 to 2 degrees negative camber and TOE only just in OR straight ahead BUT NO TOE OUT . Iv'e run toe out in some circumstances but it's not wise Tyre pressures with good semi sticky tyres not more than 18 psi on road , a touch lower on track depending on make and tread. All these figures are for your weight and intended car use NOT everybody's Stylus --- just in case others read this and duplicate it
The 20 mm wedge and other settings should give you an oversteering car under provocation . As you go quicker , you'll maybe lessen this wedge by 5 mm or so untill it understeers more than your driving style finds acceptable.
If you end up buying double adjustables , just PM me and I'll explain my own theory on settings o.k.

Is there any make you reccomend? From speaking to Tim on this in the pass, he has said use GAZ shocks as he didnt like the ProTech ones. However, my experience of GAZ shocks hasnt been the best, so im not over keen on using them, unless i can be pursuaded.

You were reffering to "the wedge" what is the wedge??

There will probally be 2 people in the car most of the time, so does the springs you reccomend reflect this, or for a single person only?

Tim and I designed the rollbar BUT Tim actually made them himself . If he can't be contacted it's quite a simple matter to make them with mine as a pattern. However , I would need to know that he didn't mind me doing it . I'll try contacting him to see how he feels about it ok. He's got some in stock from my memory though.
Antirollbar fitted will help the compromise of road/track so you needn't run 250 or 300 lbs springs up front which you may not like for road use.
Shocks ------ well I prefer AVO or Tracspax alloy double adjusters. Tracspax being 1st choice. If AVO 's , you'll be happy though. Main thing is to jack the car up after an outing and clean the suspension / shocks -- spray with WD --- then next time cleaning is easy. Half the trouble with people's complaints about shock endurance , is them treating the Stylus like a tin top --- never looking underneath/cleaning
Using mainly for road ----------- the spring rates will be fine for two guys BUT if you get serious having tried it on track , we'll need to chat again
WEDGE is simply the difference in front/rear rideheights which should be rather like a piece of cheese --------- wedge shaped low front -- high rear = oversteer Remember I said in the previous post ---- 20 mm higher at the rear seatpan area

okie dokie! so a roll bar is probally on the cards too then! With regards to Tim, i have tried calling and have sent e-mails with no reply on either. IF the item isnt copywrighted, patended then there is no problem anyway with making a copy.

Any places you think are best for shock supplies?

DEMON TWEEKS will give you 10 % if you join their POLE POSITION CLUB scheme otherwise contact AVO direct or one of SPAX dealers on the web. Mike Topp motorsport Go for the 1.9's though --- they're lighter plus a little cheaper

AVO will sell you springs too , otherwise go for FAULKNER race springs

Hi Pete&Matt, Rob et al,

Saw comment about being OK to copy an item if it is not copyrighted or patented. This is just to say that copyright exists without having to be registered or claimed. Someone just has to be able to show they designed and made the item first . This usually means having a dated drawing and records of an item sold although getting registration creates a stronger position.

The steel AVO's are fine with poly bush --- I have poly bush rears / spherical bearing fronts. When you scroll through their order sheet you'll find that they list shocks as 1.65 not the 1.9 springs that they will take , I seem to remember . Just mentioned it in case confusion arose
